Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARTHUR WILLIAM HAMMERSLEY
Peacefully on July 5, 2023 at Riverview Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years Pauline (Osterman) Hammersley; his children Carol Miles (Gerry) and Robert Hammersley (Kristin); grandchildren Nicole and Denise Hammersley; sisters Mildred Schneider and Kathleen (Kay) Haug, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Born November 21, 1925 in Birnie Manitoba, to Albert and Florence (Henton) Hammersley, Art was one of seven children to grow up on the Hammersley farm. In 1943 he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce and served overseas with his R.C.A.F. squadron till the end of the Second World War. His interest in flying and appreciation of aircraft stayed with him his entire life.
After the war, he returned to Manitoba, attending the University of Manitoba and earning a Master’s in Electrical Engineering. Art worked in electronics till he retired to a new career with City Alarm in the late 1970s.
In 1953, Art married Pauline Osterman, and on July 4, 2023, they marked their 70th anniversary with family.
Always “fixing” things, whether cars or electronics, boat motors or bicycles, you could bring it home for a fix.
A founding member of Saint James Lutheran Church, Art was also an advocate and leader in his neighborhood watch program.
Recent visits from his two surviving sisters and other family members in June of 2023 were greatly appreciated.
The family thanks the staff at Riverview for the care provided.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Art to the charity of your choice.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Hammersley’s passing. I have lived in the neighbourhood for over twenty years and often saw him working in his yard as we walked by. I had missed that I had not seen him for a few weeks. He was a wonderful neighbour and really cared about people. He will be missed. - Terri - Posted by: Terri (Neighbour) on: Jul 17, 2023
