Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD (DICK) DOUGLAS HOWARD
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Douglas Howard on July 7 at Grace Hospital.
Richard was born in Toronto, one of two children of Milton and Dorothy Howard. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister Patricia; and by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy.
Dick will be greatly missed by his son Gordon (Ruth), his grandsons, Kevin (Renée) and Ryan (Stella) as well as his great-grandsons, Linden and Ellis.
Early in life Dick moved from Toronto to Winnipeg where he lived in the Wolseley neighbourhood, attending Laura Secord and Gordon Bell Schools.
He continued his education at the University of Manitoba studying Chartered Accountancy, graduating in 1953.
After brief stints working first for his father, and then at the “Tax Office”, he landed a position at Eaton’s of Canada where he met his loving wife Dorothy.
Dick worked with Eaton’s for many years progressing through several promotions ending up managing the budgeting department for Western Canada.
Following his lengthy career with the department store company he moved on to Systems Equipment, a printing firm for a few years.
Dick was then recruited by a friend to become a managing partner with Killeen’s Auto & Plate Glass. There he enjoyed the variety of tasks and challenges offered as a partner in the business. He worked with Killeen’s for many years until his retirement.
And there was always golf! Golf was Dick’s passion.
Dick discovered the game of golf as a teenager and did whatever he could to play as much as possible.
He first belonged to St. Boniface Golf Club and then played for several decades out of Pine Ridge where he won several Club Championships. He then joined St. Charles where he enjoyed the game for many more years. These golf clubs are where he made many lifelong friends and acquaintances.
Dick played the game often, usually four to five rounds per week during the season. He also spent a lot of time practicing. As a result, he became very skilled on the golf course.
He played for Manitoba’s Willingdon Cup Team in 1954 and won several amateur tournaments over the years. And as further testament to his level of skill, he scored 11 hole in ones during his playing years.
Most importantly he made many great friends and experienced much joy in playing the game. Also, he got great pleasure in teaching Kevin and Ryan the fundamentals and traditions of the game.
A funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. with viewing prior at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, www.heartandstroke.ca

Our deepest condolences Gord to you and your family. I remember your dad when we were kids and his pride and joy, his always shiney black Cadillac. Just last weekend Lorraine and I took a ride along Kildonan Drive and pointed out to her your childhood home. Your dad is probably playing a heavenly round of golf now with all his buddies. Rest peacefully Mr. Howard. - Posted by: Ken & Lorraine Turchen (Friends ) on: Jul 15, 2023
