Peter Hardie Chester Stovel, age 89 years, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Peter was born December 1, 1933, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, one of four children to Harry and Edith Stovel.
Peter went to school in Winnipeg, where he went on to take accounting training, which became his career. Before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to work as an auditor, Peter held a number of positions including working in the menswear section at Eaton's, the Royal Bank, and Clarkson Gordon in Winnipeg, as well as a gardener in the summer of 1955 working at the Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta which was always a great memory for him.
On one of his assignments, at the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, he met the love of his life Joyce Arline Berg, and they married in 1962. They were married for over 60 years. Two boys, Peter Harry "Perry" and David William, were born while they were in Minneapolis. Then in 1966, the family moved to Brandon, Manitoba, for a work opportunity for Pete at Simplot Chemical (now Koch Fertilizer) until retiring in 1997. In Brandon two daughters followed; Kerstin Ruth and Nancy Edith.
The family enjoyed their time together golfing, skiing, camping, and road trips (air shows, Formula 1 and Indy car races, Valleyfair, golf tournaments and family gatherings). Over the years there were many enjoyable trips to Winnipeg, Minnesota, North Dakota, Florida as well as trips to Colorado, Banff/Canmore, Sudbury, Toronto, Detroit, Hawaii, and a memorable family cruise to Norway.
The family had a cottage in Matlock, Manitoba, that was just a short walk to a nice beach on Lake Winnipeg. This brought back many good memories from Peter's youth, as his family's cottage was on the lake.
Peter enjoyed many great active years with family and valued friends to travel, golf (up until just a few months ago), downhill ski (until he was 79), work on his cars and yard and many other activities he enjoyed.
Peter, along with Joyce, were very dedicated to their Lutheran faith, religion and the worship of God with many years as members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Brandon as well as time spent in choirs and bible study groups. They also enjoyed time volunteering for many causes (St. John Ambulance) and boards (Brandon Community Options) over the years, including with the Special Olympic events that Kerstin participated in.
Recently Mom and Dad had to move to different facilities, but Dad visited Mom as much as he could and was able to until recently. Dad missed Mom but was thankful to be able to meet many new friends and adapt to his new life in his assisted living apartment at the Riverheights Terrace in Brandon over the past year.
Peter was predeceased by his daughter Kerstin, his parents, brother Edward, and sister Bonnie. Peter is survived by his wife Joyce, son Perry (Kim), son David, daughter Nancy, granddaughters Kelsey and Lauren, and his brother Jim, niece Emily (Bill Whitehead, and their daughter Madi).
We will love and miss him forever, but we are at peace that he is not suffering any more, and that he is reunited with his beloved daughter Kerstin, and all of the other family and friends who went before him to a better place.
The family would like to thank all of the family and friends for your kind words and support during this sad time. We would also like to thank all of the medical staff and doctors at all of the clinics and hospitals that treated and cared for Dad over the years as he dealt with various health issues, especially during the recent escalation of his condition.
