EDWARD ROBERT HURTA

December 27, 1940 – July 18, 2023

Peacefully, on July 18, 2023, at St. Boniface Hospital, Edward Robert Hurta went to be with our loving Father in heaven at the age of 82 years.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 52 years, Marlene, son David and wife Krista, grandchildren, Daniel and Nadia, along with many other relatives and friends.

Ed was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Anna Hurta, brother Alois Hurta and sister-in-law Catherine Hurta.

Ed was born and grew up in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, Manitoba Teachers’ College and the University of Manitoba, where he obtained his Bachelor of Pedagogy, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education. He was employed by the St. James Assiniboia School Division for 35 years. He taught grade 6 at Crestview Elementary School, Social Studies at Ness Junior High and also coached basketball and volleyball. At Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, formerly Sturgeon Creek Collegiate, he taught history and geography and coached basketball. He was proud to be the coach of the Freshman Girls’ Basketball Provincial Champions in 1981.

Ed was a well-respected, hard-working and strict teacher, who was able to show his students the connection between history and current events. Many students have contacted him over the years to thank him. He also served on numerous other school and education related committees.

For 11 years, Ed served as the treasurer of the Manitoba Society for Tourette Syndrome and volunteered to be a key holder at the local community club.

Ed enjoyed reading mysteries, science fiction and history books, as well as watching old western movies, listening to all types of music and attending David’s activities. He also enjoyed spending time relaxing and going for walks at the family cottage in Lakeshore Heights. Once grandchildren arrived, he cherished numerous visits to Grande Prairie, AB, to visit, play with and spoil them.

Ed was a devout Roman Catholic, who was actively involved in various capacities at St. John XXIII parish for over 50 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

The last few years were impacted by multiple health problems and the need to begin hemodialysis treatments. While this slowed him physically, it did not slow his jovial and generous spirit.

Earlier this year, Ed and Marlene made the decision to sell their house and move into Amber Meadow, a retirement community. They were just settling into their new residence, when this most recent illness struck.

The family would like to thank Jeff, Brenda and staff from Amber Meadow for all their support and generosity. Thanks also go to all of the physicians and home care workers that cared for Ed over the years. Immense gratitude is owed to all of the staff at Seven Oaks Dialysis Unit 1, as well as Dr. Crocker and all of the staff at St. Boniface Hospital unit 6A for truly caring for him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Avenue, with viewing commencing at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations in Ed’s memory made to the Seven Oaks Hospital Foundation care of the dialysis unit or the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Sincere condolences to Ed's family and circle of friends. Ed was a member of our Uptown Flin Flon group of teenagers who shared many good times together including our years at Hapnot High School. Ed and I had many good times together as drummers in the H. B. M. & S. Pipe Band. We all appreciated Ed's sense of humour and infectious laughter. Never say goodbye. Ed, I'll see you down the road! - Posted by: Vince Dodds (Friend) on: Jul 29, 2023

  • I had been a student of his in history class at Sturgeon Creek and so was my fiancée Richard Edwards, Richard drove him nuts and same with Mr. Kowalchuk. May he rest in peace. We have both wrote a book, think of him often and Richard when I was just 21 hid my crutches, he was a punster. - Posted by: Joyce Lancaster (students) on: Jul 22, 2023

  • My sincere condolences to Marlene and David. I shared teaching the youth of Ness J.H. and Sturgeon Creek Collegiate with Ed and always admired his caring and tenacity.
