WILLIAM CALDER (BILL) CAVELL
Bill Cavell was a husband, father, grandfather, and gentleman - a sharp-dressing chartered accountant who loved Oakley sunglasses, big luxury cars and life on the links at Pine Ridge Golf Club. Known for his tenacity and integrity, he was the kind of man who wouldn’t hesitate to take 12 swings to get out of a sand trap and would insist on counting every stroke once he did.
Born on May 28, 1935, in Stratford, Ontario, Bill moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1938 and grew up in Wolseley. In high school, he played hockey and football for the Gordon Bell Panthers.
After getting kicked out of high school for fighting, Bill pursued accounting and started his own practice after receiving his C.A. designation in 1960. He earned a reputation for his loyalty and unwavering moral compass, and in 1990 went into business with his son Mike. Together, they built the firm where Bill worked until he was 79. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba recognized Bill for his 50-year membership in 2010, and Cavell & Cavell is still going strong today.
In 1958, Bill married the love of his life at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church. Over the next 53 years, he and Mavis had four kids, six dogs (mostly cocker spaniels), lots of Chinese New Year parties, many long trips to Hawaii and more dances together than anybody could count. Whether swaying to Tony Bennett on the dance floor or doing the Macarena with their grandkids in the living room, Bill and Mavis never missed a chance to bust a move.
Nothing was more important to Bill than family. He always stayed close with his parents and big brother John, and his grandchildren all have fond memories of early Christmas mornings and late Sunday dinners in the same West Kildonan home where he and Mavis raised their kids.
Along the way, Bill survived polio, losing a kidney, four types of cancer and the impact of a taxi travelling 30 km/h. But on July 28, 2023, he finally found a sand trap he couldn’t chip his way out of and passed away peacefully at Seven Oaks General Hospital at the age of 88 with family by his side.
Bill is predeceased by his wife Mavis, parents, Cecil and Jessie, and siblings, John and Lois. He leaves behind his children, Mike (Marj), Jodi (Al), Darcy (Ron) and Chris (Jocelyne), and grandchildren, Christina (Nick), Kyle, Caitlyn (Will), Evan, Taylor, Mikayla, Brylee, Jolène and JT.
He lived the last few years of his life at Kildonan House, where he loved spending his mornings listening to the Eagles and his afternoons going on outings to the casino and the Half Moon Drive In.
Not long before he died, Bill insisted one of his caregivers take him shopping at Golf Town, where he made his final purchase on this planet: a single yellow ball.
Maybe he had a tee time somewhere else.
A Celebration of Life open to all will be held at Pine Ridge Golf Club on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation

My friendship with Bill goes back to our Gordon Bell high school days. Bill had a bigger than life personality which attracted me (and many others) to him as a friend. Probably my most vivid recollection of Bill is his being on the receiving end of a touchdown pass leading to defeating Daniel Mac H S….their only loss in a three year span. My moving out of Winnipeg in the early 60s interrupted our communication but the times we reconnected at golf tourneys or other he was always the same good old Bill. Sorry to learn of his passing. My sympathy and condolences to the Cavell family and all of Bill’s friends!! - Posted by: John Rendall (Friend) on: Aug 05, 2023
