EDGAR (ED) KWONG HUNG TAAM

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Edgar (Ed) Taam, M.Arch., on Thursday, July 20th, 2023, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of 84.

Ed was born in Tianjin, China and came to Canada as a young adult, studying at McGill and later obtaining his Master of Architecture from the University of Manitoba and Washington University. He worked in the City Planning department for the City of Winnipeg and was a key part of the Chinatown Development Corporation which helped to revitalize Chinatown. He created his own construction company and eventually moved to Vancouver, where he continued his work. He had an entrepreneurial spirit which led him to pursue projects in Winnipeg including the creation of a Chinese restaurant, Cathay House, with partners Albert Wong and George Yuen, and owning and operating two Tim Hortons franchises with his first wife Gina, who he married in 1970. He also helped create a fast-food restaurant in China, Canaburger. He greatly enjoyed Vancouver and its natural surroundings, but he always maintained a connection with Winnipeg.

Ed was passionate about architecture. He continued to attend conferences, and maintained his license well after having retired. He was an easygoing individual who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He was kindhearted and generous. He enjoyed a good meal, a cup of black coffee, a bowl of hot rice, and cookies, earning him the name Cookie Monster by his children when they were growing up. Ed also enjoyed tinkering, taking things apart, putting them back together, and seeing how they were constructed. He was a handyman who could fix almost anything. He enjoyed reading financial news and took up foreign exchange trading as a hobby after he retired. He also enjoyed drives through Stanley Park.

Ed is predeceased by his mother, Cheng Chi Fun, father Tam Lai Kin, older brother Eugene, and wife Gina Meei-Ling Jyu. He is survived by his son Jason (Christine), daughter Lindsay (Maxym), grandchildren Mikaila, Noah, Isabella, and Yarema, and his second wife of twenty-one years, Li Fang.

A visitation will take place at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Burnaby, BC on August 3rd between 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a funeral service to follow on August 4th at 1:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Edgar was a gentleman, and I learnt a lot from him, and I miss him. Have not met too many people like him. Good team player, he shared his knowledge and brought the best out of everyone. I trust you will be happy in heaven with your first wife Gina whom I met while I was a first year boxology lab demonstrator and Gina, I knew would be the one to get into medical school. She did, one of two who got in in the class lab class I worked on. Edgar and I were supposed to meet in the summer of 2023, and he told me he got Covid, and the recovery was slow. - Posted by: Peter Wong (Partner in business and attended Manitoba too) on: Jun 30, 2024
