With gratitude and love for a life well-lived, the Rose family announce the passing of our beloved Aunt, Great-Aunt and Great-Great-Aunt, Shirley Jean Rose, formerly of Lions Manor. Aunt Shirley passed away at Valleyview Care Centre on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
Born in Souris, MB, on March 24, 1925, Aunt Shirley was raised on the family farm at Bunclody along with her three siblings, Allan, Margie and Bob. Her childhood was filled with many happy times – family and community gatherings, music, skating on the river, baseball games, and school.
Aunt Shirley’s first job was as a teacher at Bunclody School. She then moved to Winnipeg and worked at Birks. Aunt Shirley moved home in the early 1960s, later moving to Brandon, where she lived for the rest of her life. She worked at the telegram office for CP Rail, then Richardson Securities. Upon retirement, Aunt Shirley enjoyed travelling, bowling, line dancing, golfing and volunteer work. After moving to Lions Manor, a favourite pastime was playing bridge. All family gatherings were important to Aunt Shirley, and treasured by all of us. She was instrumental in starting the tradition of family reunions with our Ontario cousins. A highlight for many of Aunt Shirley’s great-nephews and nieces was her gift of monthly outings and adventures the year each turned nine. That gift was reciprocated by the great nephews and nieces the year Aunt Shirley turned 90!
We are forever grateful for all the stories, remembrances and laughter shared with Aunt Shirley.
Aunt Shirley was predeceased by her parents David Francis “Mack” and Mary Rose, and her siblings and their spouses, Allan and Anne Rose, Marguerite “Margy” Chapman, and David Robert “Bob” and Lois Rose. She is survived by her cousins Margery Roney of Brandon and Willene Smith of Calgary, 12 nephews and nieces, 22 great-nephews and nieces, 28 great-great-nephews and nieces and many dear and lifelong friends.
We would like to thank the staff at Valleyview Care Centre, especially those on the second floor, who provided such kind and thoughtful care.
A Come-and-Go Reception in celebration of Shirley’s life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #3, 510 Sargent Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1V8.
