It is with great sadness that we announce that our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Glenna Cobbe, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the Brandon Regional Health Center at the age of 89 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard Morris Cobbe (April 1990), her eight older siblings, and many siblings-in-law. She is survived by her children Lu-anne Kruk (Brian), Tammy Cobbe, Jill Lee (Bob), and Chad Cobbe (Lisa), grandchildren Todd Kruk, Kevin Kruk (Theresa), Britney Watters (Eric), Chelsea Keelan (Anthony), Burke McLeod (Katie), Katie Kerkowich (Derrick), Amy Lee, Peyton Cobbe (Nick), Laine Cobbe (Mike), and Sydney Cobbe. She is also survived by twelve great-children, sister-in-law Doreen Cobbe, and many nieces and nephews.
Born Glenna Arlene Rusk on March 26, 1934, in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan, to Elmer and Mary Jane Rusk, she lost her mom at an early age. Glenna looked back fondly on the years spent with her father and also loved spending many summers with her sister Evelyn Smith and family in Beaver, Manitoba.
Glenna eventually went to Winnipeg in her late teens to attend Success College, graduating in 1952. She then held several jobs as an Administrative Assistant in Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, and MacGregor.
In November 1954, Glenna married the love of her life, Howard. They went on to have four children and lived in several communities, including MacGregor, Portage la Prairie, Cranbrook BC, and Winnipeg, before settling in Dauphin in 1967. Many lifelong friendships were forged from their time in these communities.
During her many years in Dauphin, Glenna held a variety of positions before settling into a 24 year career as the secretary of the United Church. She also spent many hours sharing her talents in sewing and knitting, as well as working tirelessly as a volunteer for many organizations - Kinettes, K-40s, UCW, Girl Guides of Canada, and Dauphin Town Band, to name just a few. She stayed active by curling and square-dancing, and enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in their many activities.
Many summers were also spent in the Old Campground at Clear Lake – a place that continues to create lifelong memories for our entire family.
After her husband passed away, Glenna continued to live in Dauphin (and Clear Lake) for 20 more years and continued to be an active community member. She enjoyed trips to the US (including Hawaii), Europe, and Mexico with several of her close friends.
Glenna moved to the Lions Manor in Brandon in November 2010. During her years in Brandon, she made many new friends through the Manor and Trinity United Church, was able to stay active in so many ways (including aquacises at the Sportsplex), and never missed an event involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether it was sports, graduations, dance recitals, or Christmas concerts.
Mom wasn’t ready to leave this world as she knew there were many wonderful events to be part of, but she was brave in her fight against the terminal lung disease that ended her life. She will always be remembered as a strong, independent, courageous, and talented woman who so deeply loved her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation (ddcf.ca).
The Celebration of Glenna’s Life took place at Trinity United Church, Brandon on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 with Rev. Doug Neufeld officiating. Interment was held at the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.
