David “Dave” Penner of Brandon, MB, passed away at Fairview Home on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Dave was born to Henry and Lena Penner on February 6, 1932 in Khedive, SK. He was brother to Henry, Jacob, Ike, Tiena, Lena, Abe, Nettie, John, Sue and Lil. Dave attended school at Buffalo Valley School in Brooking, SK. At the age of 13, the family moved to Manitoba to the farm just east of Brandon. He finished his schooling at Grand Valley School. After finishing grade nine, he farmed with his dad and brothers. He especially enjoyed tractor work and combining.
In 1955, Dad married the love of his life, Jessie Loewen. They lived in Brandon for a short time, where he worked at Brandon Automobiles. In the spring of 1957, with the help of Dad Penner, they bought a farm five miles north of Douglas. This is where Dave and Jessie would settle for the next 32 years and raise their five children. Dad loved to spend time working endless hours on their farm but always had time to saddle up his favorite horse, Joy, and tow the kids around on the toboggan. After years of this he started buying new snowmobiles and slowly those horses were retired!
In 1976, Dave rented the farm out and started selling farm equipment for Mazer Implements, which after moving to Coop Implements carried on for 20 years. During those 20 years, along with selling equipment, Dave took back the land and started farming again with his sons and added more Massey combines to his fleet. From the Massey Super 92 to the Massey 860, Dad was proud of his Massey combines! In 1989, Dave and Jessie moved to Brandon to their new home on 4th Street North and later to Monterey Estates. Dad retired in 1996 and continued to help on the farm, as well as helping out his son David in the landscaping business. Dad enjoyed his vegetable garden he had at David’s country home. Dad never really retired!
There was always time to vacation. Dave and Jessie spent many years taking the family on summer vacations to Alberta and BC. Later in life they would take their trailer to Sportsman’s Park at Clear Lake, and in the winter tow their fifth wheel trailer to Texas with their close friends John and Helen Loewen.
Dave’s life was centered around his personal relationship with Jesus, both Dave and his wife Jessie would faithfully read the Bible and pray daily together. Very seldom did a Sunday go by without taking the family to church. Dad and Mom enjoyed the church family and time of worship and fellowship to include spending many summers attending family camp, church picnics and all those great noncompetitive church picnic baseball games!! Dave loved life! Psalm 100 verses four and five are verses Dad and Mom cherished together; “We give thanks to Him, and Bless His Name For the Lord is Good, His loving kindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations”
Dave is survived by his dear wife Jessie; son Larry (Jennifer) of Douglas, son Rick (Nancy) of Boissevain, son Kelly (MaryAnn) of Oakbank, daughter Wendy of Brandon, son David (Theresa) of Brandon; seven grandchildren Tim (Heidi), Amanda (Jeff), Stephanie (John), Kendra, McKenna, Ryleigh and Ashton; and six great-grandchildren Ava, Bella, Austin, Sawyer, James and Merrick. He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Jackson and Landon; five sisters and four brothers. Dave was the last sibling of this great Penner family and has now joined them all in Heaven!
The Celebration of Dave’s Life was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, August 18, 2023 with a private interment at Sparling Cemetery.
