It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
Elva was predeceased by her husband of 53 years Oswald “Ozzie” Culbertson, sister Norma Laird and brother Kern Black. Lovingly remembered by her children Diana (Yaworski), Clarke, Greg, and Garry, along with grandchildren Jennifer, Kayla (Mike), Darcy, Aaron, Drey, and Kade, great-grandchildren Evalyn and Halle, and her sister Betty Kuras. She will also be missed by her nieces, nephews and her many friends.
Mom grew up on a farm just outside of Brandon, Manitoba, daughter of Dave and Irene Black, the oldest of four children. She attended a one-room country school, junior and senior high school, and business college in Brandon. She married Ozzie in April 1951 and together they raised four children. She worked for a time at Eaton’s in Brandon and later remained at home to raise their children.
Mom was always cooking, canning, or baking, and loved working in her garden. She was an avid curler for many years and enjoyed watching it on TV. Later in life she took great pride and enjoyment in her grandchildren’s activities and loved watching the boys play hockey and the girls in dance classes or soccer games.
Mom moved into Village Green in Brandon after Dad passed. Here she made many new friends and cheerfully helped with suppers, coffee mornings, and any other activities as needed. She loved the puzzle room and playing shuffleboard. She moved into Sturgeon Creek in Winnipeg in September of 2019 to be closer to family and here she also made many new friends and enjoyed the many social activities they offered.
Mom made many beautiful quilts over the years, making sure each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had a special one. Together with her quilting group in Brandon, she helped make quilts which were then donated. She also loved her knitting, creating beautiful sweaters for family and dozens of pairs of mittens over the years donated to charities.
The Celebration of Elva’s Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, Brandon on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Craig Miller of Knox United Church officiating. There will be refreshments and a time to visit and share memories with family and friends immediately afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Elva’s name to your local Humane Society or charity of your choice.

My sympathies to Elva’s family. It is many years since any contact but I did meet her daughter who looked just like her very attractive mother as she visited me when I was living in London, England. My best regards Laraine. - Posted by: Laraine Black (Cousin) on: Sep 12, 2023
