MARIA MAIDA

(nee SCALETTA)

March 24, 1939 - August 29, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria Maida. A remarkable woman whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She peacefully departed this world on August 29, 2023, surrounded by her beloved family, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy, and cherished memories.

Maria will be greatly missed by her husband Alfredo, children Rose-Anna (Michael), Michael (Kelly), Salvatore (Mona), Lisa (Joe), grandchildren Andrew (Sabrina), Claudia (Jeff), Taylor (Christopher), Julia, Bianca, Maria, Erica, Matteo, and great-grandchildren, Ava, and Leo. She is also survived by her sisters Angela Porco and Anna Scaletta-Mooibroek (John), brothers Salvatore Scaletta (Carla) and Giuseppe Scaletta (Diane), sisters-in-law Salvatora Scaletta and Giuseppina Scaletta, and brother-in-law Pasquale Scarpelli.

Born on March 24th, 1939, in Termini Immerse, Sicily, Maria was a beacon of light to all who had the honour of crossing her path.

Maria’s family was her world. She embraced the role of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with unwavering love and devotion. She cherished each moment spent with them.

Maria’s passions were as diverse and colorful as the orchids she adored. A dedicated botanist, her green thumb was evident in everything she grew. Her love for plants was matched by her fondness for playing cards with friends, where her competitive spirit and infectious laughter made every game a memorable experience. She was such an amazing cook and baker. She looked forward to her annual Puerto Vallarta trips where she nurtured many friendships. She and Alfredo loved to dance whenever the opportunity arose, and she had the voice of an angel.

A woman of faith, Maria found strength in her devotion to her Catholic beliefs. Her spirituality was a guiding force throughout her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Maria's honor to the Health Science Centre Foundation. The family would like to thank Dr. Smith at St. Boniface Emergency and the SICU staff at HSC.

A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Maria will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the St. Bernadette Parish (820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg) with Condolences at 9:00 a.m.

May her memory continue to inspire us to live life to the fullest, just as she did.
