Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLUELLA MAE HAMEL
Peacefully, Luella passed away on August 31, 2023 at the age of 89 years.
Mom was born in Whitewood, SK on June 9, 1934. At the young age of two years, she was predeceased by mother May Arnason in 1936; later by father Grant Johnson in 1966; ex-husband Eugene Hamel; brother Carmen; sister Grace Brown; brother-in-law Allen Alcock.
Mom moved to Winnipeg in 1950 where she met and married dad, Gene. They had five children who were the love of her life: Mae (Gilbert), their children, Steph (Gina), Rich (Donna, sons, Aidan/Tamara, Zane/Lena), Cat (Jeff). Dianne (Charles), sons, Cary, Trevor. Kenneth (Sherrie), children, James, Laura (Nate). Gail (Bob), children, Jen (Lee), Melissa (Ian, daughters, Sophia, Elle), Mike. Elaine, daughters, Sabrina (Martin), Tanya and their father Gord.
She treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was so proud of them! Mom would say how blessed she was and that she had the best family ever! 18 years were spent in Fort Nelson, BC where she worked for The Northern Stores; returning to Winnipeg in 1997. Mom loved farm life, her Shetland pony Boots and her racehorse Ramona, her confidante. She loved to dance, bake, knit, puzzles, write poetry, play cards, Scrabble, the keyboard, snooker, curling, bingo, be with friends, tell a joke. She loved the times with her Red Hat Ladies and the NorthWest Company Retiree Luncheons. She was a fierce protector of her family and friends.
Mom leaves to mourn her sister, Beverley; many cousins; in-laws; and friends, who were so dear to her heart.
Mom prayed, “Lord, I offer my suffering with You on the Cross.”
Deepest gratitude to the caring staff at Brightwater Senior Living along with Palliative Care that looked after Mom and the remarkable staff at Riverview who so tenderly cared for our Mom; to our precious relatives and friends for their love, prayers and support!
A funeral celebration will be held at Notre Dame de Lorette Church, 1282 Dawson Road, Lorette MB on Monday, September 18 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jorge Mario de los Rios Londoño presiding. Interment at Whitewood Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Villa Rosa, 784 Wolseley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 1C6.
We miss you, Mom! Your strength and courage are an inspiration to us all! We love you forever and always!

It is with sincere sympathy that I offer my condolences to the family. I just found your moms obituary now. I met her at the retirement home on Nassau as she was just down the hall from me. We had many good times& she shared lots of beautiful memories about her family & her life. She had a wicked sense of humor & was always fun to be with. I moved out during COVID & we would occasionally talk on the phone. I knew her health was declining & then we lost touch. She will be missed Love & hugs to all of you.
