It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Dorene at the age of 90 after a long and fulfilling life. She will be deeply missed by her sons Chris (Brenda) and Jason (Chantal) in Winnipeg and Jeff (Lori) in White Rock, BC, as well as her grandchildren Alana and Ryan Beck; Kali, Jade and Julian Beck, great-grandchildren Lexi, Emma, Aida and Willow and her granddogs. She will also be greatly missed by her brother Don Kowal and three close friends whose friendship she treasured: Doreen Krawchuk, Anna Johnston and Sheena Brown.
She was predeceased by her parents Michael and Anne Kowal and her beloved husband Ivan Klepatz.
Earlier in her working career, Mom worked at Central Mortgage & Housing and Canadian Premiere Life. Once her kids were older, she worked at Assiniboine School Division #3 for 18 years as an Administrative Secretary in Charleswood at Royal School and later Westgrove School.
At age 18, she married Gordon Beck, the father of her children, who she was with for 35 years. They bought a cottage in Sandy Hook in 1971, where they were happy to spend many summers with their kids. In more recent years, Mom enjoyed Friday night Happy Hours with great friends and lots of hot garlic sausage on “Beck’s Deck.” Mom loved to entertain and it was always “the more the merrier.”
Mom was later married to Ivan Klepatz for over a decade. They joined Westview Ballroom Dance Club and took great pleasure in taking ballroom dancing lessons each week for years until Ivan passed away. They thought of their close friends at the club as family. After she became partially disabled due to complications from a hip replacement, Mom continued to be an associate member.
Later in her life, Mom’s first boyfriend from when she was a teenager – Doug Hughes – came back into her life five decades later. She always said that the Dear Lord sent Doug to help her get through life with her disabilities. Even though she lived in Winnipeg and Doug lived in Edmonton, they maintained a long-distance relationship for many years, talking nightly on the phone and taking turns going back and forth from one city to another. Mom also loved Doug’s family who always treated her with love, kindness and respect. When Doug passed away in 2018, Mom felt the loss very deeply having known him for more than 70 years.
In her later years, she moved to Glendale Court in St. James. The people there were funny, caring and loving. Mom loved it there for 15 years and never wanted to leave. She moved to assisted living at Sturgeon Creek II in 2020, which she also enjoyed.
Mom was very active with technology and enjoyed her iPhone and iPad and her visits to the Apple Store. She was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League and was honoured with a 65 Year pin in 2020. Her and her brother Don were always very proud of both their Catholic faith and Ukrainian heritage.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cho and his wonderful staff, Judy and Misbah, at Assiniboine Medical Clinic for their care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd., at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023.

Great memories of Sandy Hook Days when we rented a cottage across the lane from the Marion fmily for many years. We felt we were part of the family as it was almost impossible not to. Friday night drinks in the front yard was always filled with laughter and hospitallity Roger McNeill - Posted by: Roger McNeill (Old Friend From Log ago) on: Sep 17, 2023

I got to know both Dorene and Ivan through all the good times we had as members of Westview Dance Club.Dorene hosted many parties at their home bringing our dance class together and creating friendships that have endured for 20 or so years. She was always so glamorous and well put together. Always a smile on her beautiful face. As life changed and Doug came back into her life we had great times with him as well. Doug hosted a big 83 birthday party for Dorene and got in touch with me to not only invite but request that we come back early from Texas where we wintered to be there. We did! And it was fun! May she rest in peace knowing she leaves very special memories behind. - Posted by: Bev Gunnarson (Friend ) on: Sep 16, 2023

I remember all the wonderful and amazing summers at the lake, Sandy Hook, with Doreen as our neighbour (and of course Jason, and Chris). Doreen would come over every few weeks and knock on our back door to ask if we could refill their water tanks. We had a well for water and Doreen did not, but relied on rain to refill the several large water tanks they had to supply water to the cottage so when they ran low we pulled out the water hose and refilled their water tanks. Also have many fond memories of the Friday evening 'Happy Hour' times on the front deck that Jason convinced Doreen to build. Many happy memories that I will cherish. Doreen may have passed but the many happy memories remain in our hearts so she will never be forgotten. - Posted by: James Neirinck (Friend) on: Sep 16, 2023
