MILTON JAMES BLACK

We sadly announce the passing of Milt Black September 8, 2023.

Born in St. Boniface, Manitoba June 20, 1949, to Hazel Stroud Black (nee Cober) and David James Black, he leaves ex-wife Sigrid Barbara Black (nee Gollub), sisters, Beverley McLeod and Maureen Olson, their children and grandchildren.

Milt was 36th NHL draft pick in 1969, for the Chicago Black Hawks. When the Winnipeg Jets built their first WHA team in 1972, hometown boy Milt was recruited with other greats like Bobby Hull. After three seasons, Milt played in Sweden and Germany. His points record for Augsburg EV remains unbeaten. After a career-ending leg injury Milt settled in Matlock, then fulfilled his dreams by moving to Invermere, BC to work at Panorama Ski Resort and Radium Golf Course.

A gentle soul, his deep love of music could bring him to tears. He loved to laugh and found humour in many everyday situations. His famous appetite ranged from choice steaks to Kraft dinner. He loved a simple life: spending active time outdoors hiking, skiing, and golfing, or with family and friends, including his three best friends, Sigrid Black, Alexander Dryburgh and Rick Wagner. He will be missed, but his memory will inspire us to be our best, do what we love, savour times with loved ones, and embrace the simple things in life.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I'm sorry to hear of Milt's passing. He was a West End boy who stood out at everything he did. I was very fortunate to play some community club hockey with Milt at the young age of elementary and junior high school. He was always a leader and a peer hero. He was the first to recognize when a teammate got his first goal or a hat trick and modest when he got several. He treated everyone with respect and that is what I remember most. Even as he became a local success in his hockey career he would remain friends and if he saw you on the street he would stop just to say hi. - Posted by: Bill Macdonald (Isaac Brock school friend) on: Sep 23, 2023

  • I played little league baseball with Milt. We went to Daniel Mac high school together. Milt was an all star no matter what he played. Sorry to hear about his passing. - Posted by: Doug Black (Friend) on: Sep 23, 2023

  • Sincere condolences to all of Milt’s family and friends on his passing. I’ve been a friend and teammate of Milt’s for 60+ years, and he has been a truly kind, generous person as a boy and as a man. A special athlete who rose to the professional level, Milt remained the same grounded considerate person. RIP Milt…. - Posted by: Dave McConachy (Childhood friend, baseball and hockey teammates ) on: Sep 19, 2023

  • Some players remember you fondly from your hockey officiating days and Milt was one of them. When he was living in Matlock, my parents often would mention how Milt would stop by their cottage for a visit. My mother always called him a nice young man. - Posted by: Kent Morgan (Friend) on: Sep 17, 2023

  • Barbra, I’m truly saddened to learn of Milt's passing, please accept my heartfelt condolences. I thoroughly enjoyed many interesting conversations with Mil about his NHL and in particular his European Hockey experiences. They were truly entertaining and gave one a welcomed insight to his wonderful personality. The Matlock community sorely missed him when the move away occurred and both Milt’s and your names are oftentimes a part of local conversations. May Milt’s spirit rest in peace and remembrances of him be everlasting. - Posted by: Laurence (Laurie) Russin (Acquaintance / Client) on: Sep 17, 2023

  • I am so sorry to hear of Milt’s passing, he was truly a wonderful person. I fondly remember all the wonderful times we shared together at Matlock with Barb and Sandy and myself, the hours we spent together playing our version of “frisbee golf” Milton’s memory will live on in the wonderful lifelong friends he has left behind. He will be missed Sincerely Colleen - Posted by: Colleen (Anderson) Manning (Friend) on: Sep 17, 2023
