MARIKO SATO

(nee IKEDA)

November 23, 1928 - August 14, 2023

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mariko Sato on Monday, August 14, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 94.

Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are her husband of 65 years, Akio Sato; children, Diane Sato of Vancouver, BC, Wayne (Vivian) Sato, Karen (David) Labram and Glenn (Diana) Sato all of Winnipeg; grandchildren, MacKenzie (Steven) Dyck, Hailey, Easton (Sarah), Aysia, Jaden, Tache, Nathan, and Lucas; sister Yoshiye Nakata (Dick - deceased) and Hiroko Ikeda.

Mariko was predeceased by her parents, Gunjiro (Kado) and Ayano Ikeda; sisters, Hatsuve (Yosh d.) Akune, Teruko (Peter d.) Savage, Setsuko (Dairo d.) Matsugi; and brother Hiromu (Haruko) Ikeda.

Mariko was born in Vancouver, BC. She married and started a family in Calgary, Alberta and later moved to Winnipeg. Mariko was a devoted wife and a doting mother who could not do enough for family and friends. Mariko delighted in preparing large Sunday dinners and loved spending time at the Cultural Centre, welcoming newcomers, teaching origami at Folklorama and swimming at Concordia Pool where she was a recognized member of “The Kilo - Club”. Mom, you lived your life with cheer, kindness, and compassion. Thank you for the happiness you have brought to all of our lives. We love you dearly and you will be in our hearts forever.

The family would also like to thank the wonderful staff at River Ridge Retirement Residence. Mom and Dad were proud to host many family get-togethers, and dinners at River Ridge and received excellent care and attention. The family would also like to thank the nurses and doctors at Victoria General Hospital for making Mom’s final weeks so comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba, 180 McPhillips St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 2J9.

As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place with no formal service to be held.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to the Sato family members on their loss. The family were long time across the street neighbors. Marie was always very cheerful and never missed saying hello or inquiring about the well being of the members of our neighborhood. Since their move away from the area we have lost touch but the family remained in our minds and hearts always. Rest in peace, Marie. - Posted by: Vicki Lazaruk (long time Rockspur St neighbor) on: Sep 16, 2023
