LINDA LAMINMAN

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, Linda Louise Laminman on Monday, September 11, 2023 after a battle with cancer.

Linda was predeceased by her father Lloyd Laminman and survived by her mother Alice, sister Shari (Kelly) Lee and niece Kayla (Cliff) Taylor, great nephews Casey and Hudson, nephew Shaun Lee (Sophie Shippen), brother Brent Laminman and nephew Derek (Vanessa), great nephew Connor and great niece McKenna, nephew Triston, brother Daryn (Kristal) Laminman, niece Brittany (Graham Smith) and nephew Brendan (Katie Wiebe). She is also survived by many extended family members on the Laminman and Stouffer sides.

Linda was born in Brandon, Manitoba, on July 16th, 1959, the eldest child of Alice and Lloyd Laminman. She grew up in the south end of Brandon where she attended George Fitton, MacLaren, Harrison, and Neelin schools. After high school, Linda moved to Alberta, where she graduated from the Environmental Science program at Lethbridge Community College.

After College graduation, Linda worked for Alberta Parks for several years, taking her across Alberta. In 1985, she graduated from Alberta Correctional Officer training in Grand Cache, Alberta and was awarded the Helen Hunley Award for being the top student in her class. After spending a few years in Grande Cache, Linda transferred to the Red Deer Remand Centre, where she spent the remainder of her corrections career in various capacities.

Linda was a very active member of the Alberta Union of Public Employees. She held several positions with the AUPE including Local 003 council seat for corrections and regulatory committee for over 20 years, 10 of which she served as treasurer, while also serving as a member of the AUPE finance committee. Linda earned respect and a reputation as someone who would stand up for hard-working people and underdogs. Linda was awarded the Dove Award from the AUPE for women supporting women and being a long-serving member in good standing. Linda became a lifetime member of the AUPE upon her retirement.

After 30 years in Alberta Corrections, Linda retired in 2015 and returned home to Brandon to be closer to family.

From the beginning, Linda loved sports. She started with figure skating lessons, which at the time was what girls did, but her passion was for hockey. She wanted to play so badly that our mom and dad along with others started a girl’s team at the South End Community Centre at a time when girls did not play hockey. Linda had a wicked slapshot that made the boldest of boys shake in their skates! Throughout her youth and into her 40s, she continued to play and enjoy hockey. Playing in Lethbridge, Red Deer, and all over Alberta. She was the first female to play in the Alberta Solicitor General’s tournament with her fellow officers.

Linda also loved fastball and excelled as a catcher. She was also an avid curler, playing in many leagues and bonspiels over the years across Alberta and Manitoba. Linda’s real passion was golf. Spending all free time on the course or on golf vacations all over the country and the world. Linda won several ladies' league titles at her club in Red Deer and back at Oak Island in Manitoba. She was very proud when she hit her hole-in-one at the Balmoral Golf Course in Red Deer. Her favorite time on the course would be with her nephews.

Linda was very happy to spread her love for sports, and spent several years coaching curling and golf with the Special Olympics programs in Red Deer and in Brandon. Her passion for sport would be equaled with her passion for coaching and for her athletes. She was always excited to share the stories and accomplishments of her athletes.

Linda loved to travel! Throughout her life, she was very fortunate to travel to many places from one side of Canada to the other! As well as countries including the U.S., Germany, Scotland, England, Czech Republic, Morocco, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Australia. Her travel fueled her passion for photography, nature and her family being her favorite subjects.

Linda was extremely close to her family, especially her nieces and nephews, and their children, never missing a chance to travel, camp or cheer them on in their sports.

Linda was a unique and passionate person who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Thanks to all family and friends who have supported her and our family during her illness.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Linda was a friend of my younger sister Susan Badham. They hung around together as teenagers and loved their sports. Unfortunately we lost Susan to brain cancer in 2002. We therefore lost track of Linda. Our deepest condolences to your family. It is so interesting to discover what Linda achieved in her life. You must be very proud! - Posted by: Darlene & John Van Mulligen (Friend) on: Sep 26, 2023
