BARBARA JOAN SIGURDSON
Peacefully, with family by her side, Barbara Joan Sigurdson passed away at St. Boniface Hospital.
Barbara was born in Winnipeg, daughter of J.T. Vyvian and Ethel (Bergman) May.
Barbara leaves to mourn; her beloved husband of over 66 years, Dennis; daughter Cathy Burke (Patrick), son Bill Sigurdson (Sherry), daughter Joanne Sigurdson (Carlo Maola); grandsons, Sean (Melissa Pilz), Tim and Kerry Burke and Chris and David (Mickey) Sigurdson; sister-in-law Karen May, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert B. May.
Barb graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1957, with a BA English Honours Major and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was a voracious reader; a passion she instilled in her three children, along with her love for live theatre. Barb worked in the development office as a fundraiser at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and at the University of Manitoba’s Alumni Association.
Barb was proud of her Icelandic heritage and was very involved with the Jon Sigurdson chapter of the IODE, was a board member of the Logberg-Heimskringla newspaper and worked for the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. She was an avid volunteer, working at the Junior League of Winnipeg’s Thrift Shop and helping start their Call for Action program in the 1970s, working on political campaigns, and volunteering at every Lutheran Church she attended over the years. Barb was a faithful friend, who was always there to help and give support. She enjoyed spending time with her friends at The Parkway. Barb loved traveling with Dennis on their many trips around the world, and on their winter stays in Florida after retirement. But Barb’s favourite place on earth was to be at the family cottage her dad built on Sandy Lake, near Laclu, Ontario. There was nothing better to her than sitting on the deck overlooking the lake, with a book in hand and a cup of tea, or a rum and coke, listening to the loons. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was always there when her family needed her. Barb especially cherished her role as an Amma, and she loved her 5 grandsons unconditionally. Nothing made her happier than spending time with them, and she welcomed their partners with love.
The family would like to thank nurses Vida and Vanessa at St. Boniface Hospital for their care.
A funeral service will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, on Thursday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date. A Webcast will be available for those unable to attend in person.
Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, or a charity of your choice.

We have known Barbara’s cousin David Bergman for many years but finally got to know her better when she and Dennis moved to the Parkway last year. It became a great friendship even though it was for a short time. It’s sad to lose a good friend but considering what she was going through it was for the best as she is in a better place now. We offer our condolences to Dennis, the children and the grandchildren. - Posted by: Edwin & Janet Peart (Friends) on: Oct 01, 2023

Very sad to hearing of Mrs. Sigurdson’s passing. Our family were next door neighbours of the Sigurdson’s on Westdale Place and have many fond memories. Westdale was a wonderful street to grow up on with great neighbours. We enjoyed visiting their cottage and our hikes/blueberry picking. Sincere condolences to Mr. Sigurdson, Cathy, Bill and Joanne. - Posted by: Murray Sisler (Neighbour) on: Sep 30, 2023

Lovingly thinking of you all with such great memories of my many and varied experiences with your very special family. My mother Olive Lundstrom loved Barbara’s mom Ethel May and they had so much fun together. Then I nursed Dennis’s mother at Deer Lodge and through all that and IODE and Scandinavian centre Barbara and I became friends. I will always be grateful for these rich experiences with you all. Bless you all now. - Posted by: Sonja Lundstrom (Friend) on: Sep 30, 2023
