ALFRED J. STEPHENS

1927 - 2023

On September 26, 2023, Alf Stephens joined Lisa, his parents, siblings and many friends in Heaven.
He was "Dad" to Christine and Lawrence; “Grandad" to Melanie (Dane), Aaron and Carli (Will); "Grandee" to great-grandchildren, Zorayan, Berlin, Billie and Sid; and "Friend" to many.

He was born on February 8, 1927, in England, but spent his youth in India. After his enlistment in the British Army, he courted and married Lisa in Germany in 1950 before immigrating to Winnipeg, Canada as a family of four in 1957.

Alf was a faithful man with a passion for "all things insurance”; continuing to work well into his 80s. He was an entertainer; sharing limericks, songs on the Ukulele or spoons and stories about his vast experiences parachuting, boxing, playing field hockey and tennis, or singing in the Opera chorus and Joie de Vivre Choir. A gentleman, he took pride in his appearance, always making sure he was smartly dressed, and was frequently told that he had not aged a day beyond 70.

The Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on October 4, 2023, at the St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, Winnipeg, MB. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. Private interment will take place at Assumption Cemetery.
Alf supported numerous charities so, in lieu of flowers, please support the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • We are very saddened to hear of the passing of Alf. He was so very proud when I spoke to him on the Queen's Birthday as he said " I am as old as the Queen"!! Always so very kind and persevering. My uncle from Germany also played the spoons!! His many friends from St. John Brebeuf have missed Alf and are very sorry to hear of his passing. Our deepest condolences and prayers during this time. - Posted by: Barbara Rolstone (Fellow parishioner and Serra of Winnipeg Member) on: Sep 30, 2023
