PERCY MARTEN
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Percy Marten. Beloved husband, father, and friend. He passed quietly in his sleep on September 21, 2023, at Extendicare Oakview Place in Winnipeg, MB.
He is survived by his wife Sheila; and sons, Shawn (Elaine), Gavin (Nessa), and Chris (Alexa). He is predeceased by his parents, John and Gladys; and siblings, Arnold, Horace, Evelyn, Gordon, Elsie, Audrey, Dennis, Edward, Lawrence, and Gertrude.
Percy was born on the family farm near Cypress River, MB in 1939. In his youth the family moved to a farm near Glenboro, MB. When father John retired from farming, the family moved to Winnipeg where Percy took on a job as a mechanic at his brother-in-law’s Volkswagen dealership. Later Percy would join his brother working for Canadian Linen where he drove delivery to Brandon. He would settle down with first wife, Gail, and make their home in Headingley with their son Shawn, where he worked as a mechanic at the local garage. An interest in stock car racing would develop a relationship that led to a new career path as a self-employed traveling salesman of auto parts. In 2000 he would retire from Mar-Ten Distributors.
It was lucky that Percy enjoyed driving as a number of his jobs did require a lot of hours behind the wheel. He was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting. If there was a snowstorm brewing, you could be sure that he would find a reason to be out driving in it. He liked to camp. He was known amongst friends for the campfire kitchens he made for them. In his later years he would keep returning to the Glenboro area with his various RVs. He followed the Jets and Bombers. His interest in sports had him playing on a Headingley town baseball team as a young man and coached the local girl’s baseball team.
The family would like to thank the staff of Extendicare Oakview Place for looking after Percy.
A memorial service and reception will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.

I knew Percy for quite awhile in my earlier years. He was a man that was there to help anyone who needed a hand with most anything. We spent alot of time together at the coffee shop the snowmobile race shop and bent over the fender of one or another car that I had to tune or fix. As life goes I moved away and its been along time. That being what it is Percy will always be one of my cornerstones, in my character, my heart and memories. Percy had the greatest chuckle and wonderful smile. I am sad though I am sure Percy is at peace in Heaven. Dale - Posted by: Dale Hamill (Friend in Headingley) on: Oct 03, 2023
