DOROTHY HUFF

(nee HORNE)

September 29, 1929 – September 30, 2023

A day after turning 94, Dorothy passed away on September 30, 2023.

Dorothy was born in 1929 to Elsie and Jack Horne. She had a wonderful childhood and was proud to have grown up in the North End, living across the street from her grandparents to whom she was very close. Her sister Yvonne was born when Dorothy was six. Dorothy adored her baby sister, a bond that continued until Yvonne’s passing in 1998.

Dorothy had a passion for baseball, at a time when gloves were optional. She enjoyed working at Christie’s Biscuits, where she made many friends. In 1951, Dorothy married Allen Huff and later welcomed Clyde and Marla (Jeff), who they raised in East Kildonan. She was a wonderful Nanny to grandchildren Kailey (Brian) and Shane (Katharine), and shared many hugs, games of make-believe, and songs Shane would play for her on the guitar. She was later an adoring Great-Nanny to Reid and Nora, who loved “helping” her push her walker.

Dorothy’s favourite place was Granite Lake. She loved blueberry picking and swimming in the lake and was always the first one in in the spring. In her later years, she enjoyed her daily walks and made many friends on her outings, earning her the nickname “Grandmother of Walking.”

Dorothy’s faith was very important to her. She spoke with God daily and would sing hymns to herself on her walks.

Many thanks to the staff at Harmony Court and all her dancing partners.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on October 12, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Ave, where Dorothy was a member for 60 years.
