OLIVE DZOGAN

1928 - 2023

After a brief illness, Olive passed away on October 8th at the Victoria General Hospital with her children by her bedside. She was predeceased in 2019 by her loving husband of 70 years, Dave. Olive will be missed with heavy hearts by her son, Ken (Leslie), daughter, Jan Jennings (Les), daughter, Sandy, grandchildren, Ted (Sharla) and Colleen, and great-grandchildren, Edan, Aleena, and Kane as well as her very dear brother, Ed Kustra (Lil). Olive also had great affection for her sweet little grand-dog, Eddy.

Olive was born and raised in Winnipeg. At the age of 16, she met Dave at a malt shop, and told her friend, “He’s mine!” Graduating from Isaac Newton High School a year later, she went on to start her career in the Winnipeg Free Press classified department. Olive and Dave married in 1948, and a few years later, Olive left the Free Press to focus on raising her family.

In 1966, Olive and Dave moved to Brandon when Dave accepted an instructor position at Assiniboine Community College. Once her children reached an appropriate age, Olive re-entered the workforce and enjoyed holding several office positions. In 1980, she found her passion as Assistant to the Administrator at Brandon University student residences. There, beyond her office duties, she was like a mother to all the students, who turned to her for a sympathetic ear and sound advice. She was deeply touched that many of the international students kept in contact with her throughout the years, even to this day.

From a young age, Olive had a creative side. As a child, she played the mandolin and her love of music continued into her adult life, whether attending concerts or singing in the Westman Philharmonic Choir. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed doing ceramics. Olive was also an enthusiastic Blue Bomber and Jets fan and was looking forward to the successful conclusion of the football season and the start of the hockey season.

After retirement, Olive and Dave moved back to Winnipeg. They enjoyed cruises, trips across North America and Europe, and visiting family from coast to coast in Canada. They were honoured as long-time members of The Reh-Fit Centre, where they appreciated both the physical fitness and social aspects. After 26 years in Westwood, Olive and Dave made their new home at The Boulton Retirement Community. A very outgoing and kind person with a good sense of humour, Olive quickly made new friends with both residents and staff.

The family would like to thank The Boulton Community for their sympathy and support at this time. We would also like to thank Olive’s family physician, Dr. Nicolle Bristow, and homecare nurses Mary, Nikki, and Adrien. Heartfelt appreciation to the staff of 5N at the Victoria General Hospital, with special gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Jeanne Young.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Olive at a later date.

Should you wish, a donation in Olive’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

We’ll miss you always, Mom, and take comfort in the loving memories.
