BARBARA JEAN REX

1948 - 2023

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Barbara Jean (Byers) Rex. First born of Bertha (Gunter) and Jake Byers of Selkirk, Manitoba.
Barb was born in Winnipeg, July 1948, and raised on the Selkirk Mental Hospital grounds where her father was the Head Gardener.
Barb will forever be remembered by her husband of 25 years, Richard (Dick) Rex; her sons, Jeff (Lianne) Kowalchuk, Randy (Leanna) Kowalchuk; granddaughters, Avia, Katelyn, Grace, and Mya; her son Joel (Lara) Melashenko, raised by adoptive parents; grandson Jonathan; stepdaughter Carly (Chris) Petersen; her brothers, Doug Byers, John (Mary) Byers, Tim (Petra) Byers, and Don (Donna) Byers, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents and sister-in-law Cathy Byers.
Barb’s first job was hairdressing in Calgary where her children were born. The family moved to Gillam where the Limestone Generating Station was being built. Ten years later Barb and children returned to Selkirk where she pursued a nursing career, first as a Psychiatric Nurse, and later trained at Red River College to become an RN. She worked on D6-HSC Bone Marrow Transplant Ward, retiring after 20 years as a CONC nurse.
Retirement was thoroughly enjoyed with many trips to Hawaii (her favourite) and many ocean cruises. Trips to Alberta and New York for weddings and the arrival of grandchildren, school events, and seasonal celebrations completed retirement.
We would like to thank Winnipeg Emergency Services, and the wonderful care on G4 and Comfort Care at HSC.
Barb was a strong and devout Christian and a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church. Services were held at St. Clements Anglican Church in Selkirk, with interment at Columbarium C. The Venerable Paul Lampman officiated, with the last walk accompanied by bagpipe tunes by Don Byers. Reception followed at the Royal Canadian Legion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Barb’s name to a charity of your choice.
