Date of Passing: Oct 31, 2023
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER CHESLOCK
Walter passed peacefully after a short battle with dementia and a 40-year fight with heart disease.
He will be missed immensely by his daughter Jennifer (George Buri); and sister Bev (Mike Lesiuk); along with niece and goddaughter Katy; and nephew Alex; as well as brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, and their families. Walter is predeceased by Lynne, his wife of 45 years; older brother Don; and parents, Anne Popowich and John.
Walter was born in Selkirk and grew up on a farm in Cloverdale. His passion for education led to a career as a school principal with over 30 years of teaching in Ninette, Amaranth, Minnedosa, and finally Oak Lake, MB, where he and Lynne lived most of their lives. An active member of the community, Walter volunteered with the Oak Lake Lions' Club, the ambulance service, and served briefly as mayor. His love of gardening and rototilling for neighbours kept him connected to the land, as well as helping his brother Don with farming. He spent summers working as a crop hail adjuster and made wonderful friends across the prairie provinces. In 2008 he and Lynne moved to Cloverdale where he enjoyed hobby farming, but after Lynne's passing in 2013, life was lonelier. Good times with family and neighbours and winters spent in Arizona brought him great happiness. In 2020 he finally "retired" to a lakeside cottage near Lac du Bonnet to enjoy relaxation and fishing. He will be remembered for his friendliness, generosity, and hospitality.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m., in the Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk, MB. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed with the link available at gilbartfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

Mr. Cheslock was a great principal for sure. I remember his smile and kindness which a few of us would test. I remember one Halloween having a plan to soap his windows but I don’t think we went through with it. I always thought they named their daughter after me, I was in Mrs. Cheslock’s class when she was pregnant. My condolences to the family. I have such found memories of your parents. May the Lord comfort you in your grief. - Posted by: Jennifer Delavau (Winters) (Former student at Oak Lake) on: Nov 19, 2023

I knew Walter when he taught us at Minnedosa (Crossley Collegiate) in 1968-69. He was always a very down to earth guy with a great sense of humour. He always yelled "Pollonowski!" with that big deep voice when I started acting up. As I recall he drove a 67 Chevy ragtop in those days so we all considered him to be a pretty cool dude. Sorry to hear that he is gone but I guess he has arrived at the destination to which we are all travelling. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Brion Pollon (student) on: Nov 09, 2023

I was startled to see Mr. Cheslock's picture today. I was thinking about him a few days ago while recanting my time at Assiniboine Elementary in Oak Lake. Mr. Cheslock was THE BEST principal, possibly ever. He was always poised, friendly and had a very inviting nature to him that made any student feel comfortable coming to him to talk. I remember visiting the Cheslocks well into my young adult years and their continued interest in my life meant a lot. I will always treasure my memories of Mr. Cheslock's smile, deep voice, faint scent of peppermint, toothpick in his mouth, silver belt buckle coupled with dress pants and cowboy boots that you could hear coming down the hall. Deepest condolences to his family. His memory will live in on more than just hearts, I'm positive of it. - Posted by: Maggie Boyko (Thiessen) (former student) on: Nov 04, 2023
