KATHLEEN JOYCE OLIPHANT

August 6, 1928 - October 31, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Kathleen Oliphant (nee Johnstone), at the age of 95.
Raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was forever Edinburgh Proud.
Kathleen met Johnston (Jock) Oliphant in Edinburgh, where they enjoyed dancing and day trips on his motorcycle throughout Scotland. They were married June 23, 1948 and immigrated to Winnipeg in August 1948. They bought a newly built house in the Riverview area in June 1952, where they raised their children, Bill, Gordon, and Gail. She took great pride living in that same home for over 71 years.
Kathleen had many interests throughout the years. She enjoyed dancing, synchronized swimming, volunteering, sewing, knitting, gardening, baking (best shortbread and chocolate chip cookies ever!), yoga, aqua-size fitness, reading, and doing puzzles such as crosswords, cryptoquotes and jumbles. Over the years, she had four Irish Setter dogs, Sherry, Amber, Clover, and Shannon that she enjoyed walking daily, and was always comforted by her Siamese cat, Chi Ling. Kathleen also kept busy working part time at The Bay for several years.
Kathleen was always clear minded and knew exactly what she wanted. She was the sweetest and kindest woman you could know, but also had a stubborn side when needed. She was very independent, witty, and still sassy until the end.
Left to cherish her memory are her son Gordon (Lenora) Oliphant; daughter Gail (Tony) Caligiuri; grandchildren, Kellie (Bruce) Burns, Ian (Courtney) Oliphant, Lesley Caligiuri; great-grandchildren, Logan, Mackenzie, and Danika Oliphant; sister Norma Zimmerman; brother Brian Johnstone; many nieces and nephews; and close friend Margot MacDonald.
Kathleen was predeceased by her husband Jock Oliphant; son Bill Oliphant; grandson David Caligiuri; parents, William and Sophia Johnstone; sister Gwynne (Mike) Hayton; in-laws, John Zimmerman, David (Maisie) Oliphant, and Bob (Madeline) Oliphant; nieces, Carol and Kathryn Oliphant; and nephew Michael Oliphant.
Thank you to the dedicated staff of Victoria Hospital, 4 North and 4 South, for caring for Kathleen the last few weeks of her life.
To honour Kathleen’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House, The Dream Factory, or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My most sincere condolences to the entire family on the passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Kathleen. She was such a sweet lady indeed. I got to know her after I met Jock in 1994. I was also very saddened to hear of the passing of Jock & Kathleen's son Bill a year or two past. I had no idea that he had passed and missed the announcement in the paper. Jock and I had become good friends in 1994 until his passing in 2000. There's not a day goes by that I drive past Portage and Marjorie without a glance over to where Hydrade Cabinets was, or a glance towards Wavell Avenue when on Osborne or Sargent Avenue passing Bill's house. I consider myself so fortunate to have met and been a friend of the Oliphant family. Please accept my profound sympathy. - Posted by: Bob Russell (Friend) on: Nov 17, 2023

  • My condolences to all of the Oliphant family. - Posted by: Craig Taplin (Former neighbor) on: Nov 11, 2023

  • I know my mother always considered her a good friend and enjoyed her company at their coffee club meetings. She was always very kind & I found her easy to talk to when I went to call on Gord. My condolences to the whole family. - Posted by: Carl Marshall (Neighbour & Friend) on: Nov 11, 2023
