• Kathy and Jay Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families with the loss of your Mom and Grandmother. Joan, Shirley and Betty were my second cousins and who could ever forget their Dad, Uncle Buck. Over the years as a young guy, I could never forget the laughs we had whenever Buck, Frank, Percy and Bill were ever all together. Those brothers could have been stand up comedians along with their sister Auntie Ella and Grandma Moore. • Joan hired me to work at the Moonlight Inn when I was just 14. I learned the kitchen routines, preparing potatoes to make chips by putting them into a washing machine tub, turning it on and letting it run... to strip the peels off, prior to putting them one at a time into the chip maker fastened on the kitchen wall. Then we pre-fried to speed up when orders were brought from the front counter. That is when I learned never to dry dishes. They were to be washed by hand in detergent water, then rinsed in a sink field with Javex water and placed standing in the dish racks to dry. Scooping ice cream when the tubs were just delivered built up the muscles in my right arm (Frozen hard took a lot of pressure to create cone and milkshakes). Being ready for the crowd after the movie nights in the Community Club meant working quickly... they were ready to spend money. The Notions side of the inn carried cigarettes, aspirin, et al. Afternoons when people were on their way to the beach (2-4PM), they would stop in and buy fountain Cokes in milkshake containers with ice. Being open until 11PM, then walking home to the family cottage on Bayview was safe even with no street lights on the road. Learning to work as part of the team of teens was fun, and we would wait in the room upstairs until our shift began gave us time to know more about each other, our families, and what was going on in the Beach. The Moonlight Inn was beside the summer office of the RCMP, and close to the railway station. On Sunday mornings, when church let out in time for people to meet the noon train, we would get busy as they streamed into the Inn and got something to eat on their way back to their cottages. On the other side was the log cabin where Joan and Len lived. And beside that was the Barber shop during the summer months, and across the road from the Butcher shop. We didn't see much of Len as he was in the City, and came out on weekends. That was a great summer job and I appreciated Joan taking a chance on hiring me as a 14 year old...
