GARTH ALAN STEIDL

February 20, 1959 -

November 3, 2023

Peacefully, after a lengthy battle with cancer, Garth passed away at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Garth was born in Winnipeg, MB. He was an intelligent young man and became a remarkable bridge player at a young age. As a teenager, he was part of the team that represented his High School on the CBC TV show, Reach For The Top.

He grew up watching wrestling with his Dad and became hooked. Hardly a day would go by without Garth watching his favourite wrestlers. He also loved sports. He would be so proud of his Blue Bombers! Not only did he play softball but he umpired for several years for Softball Manitoba.

He worked at the Canadian Grain Commission in downtown Winnipeg for 32 years and loved his job.

Garth was predeceased by his parents, Jenny and Gerald Steidl as well as his in-laws, Jack and Sharon Coote and his brother-in-law Ian Coote.

He leaves behind his wife Colleen, his stepkids, Jason, Ian and Sharon, his brothers, Gavin (Lisa) and Greg (Laura), sister-in-law Jeannette Coote and nieces and nephews.

At his request, Garth has been cremated and to honour his wishes there will not be a ceremony.

The family would like to thank the Oakbank Fire and Paramedic for their kind treatment of Garth and the Selkirk Regional Health Center for taking care of him in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Garth's memory, to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was fortunate to meet Garth during our many noon-time Walking Club walks when we both worked for the Canadian Grain Commission. Garth was always interested in what research the other members of the walking club were doing. Like a true Manitoban, Garth rarely missed a walk when there was inclement weather. My sincere condolences to his family. Garth was a great guy. - Posted by: Andrew Minkevich (Former CGC colleague) on: Dec 04, 2023

  • My condolences to Garth's family. I worked with Garth at CGC for a lot of years we had many conversations, we went walking together at lunch, played softball and had a few drinks over the years. Again my sincere condolences - Posted by: Craig Taplin (Former coworker ) on: Nov 19, 2023

  • Garth was one of the first people I met when I went to work in the Grain Research Lab of the Canadian Grain Commission. His lab was just down the hall from the lab I started in but I also got to know him over many coffee breaks over at the Winnipeg Square food court. I was always impressed by his generosity and commitment to his co-workers. For some time Garth managed the Flower Fund, the account that gathered donations monthly from GRL employees and then used those funds to send flowers when people were ill or had lost a family member. It wasn't a requirement of his job; he just stepped in to fill a need. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed. - Posted by: Wendy Barker (Co-worker) on: Nov 19, 2023
