JANET STEEVES

December 28, 1936 - November 11, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janet Steeves, 86, on Saturday, November 11, 2023, after a short illness.

Janet was born December 28, 1936, in Ridgewood, New Jersey to Dr. Carl and Julia (Magoon) Bair. She was the second of three daughters. After graduating high school, Janet was hired to do some typing for a university student from New Brunswick, Douglas Steeves, whom she would marry in 1957.

Janet and Doug moved to Canada after their marriage, following Doug’s career as an educator. They lived first in Nova Scotia, then Hudson, Quebec, before settling in Brandon in 1966.

In Brandon, Janet raised four children, ran a home daycare and supported Doug’s establishment of football programs at Brandon University, Neelin, Crocus Plains and Vincent Massey High Schools. She is fondly remembered by so many football players and their families for her tireless support: from washing jerseys to cheering on the sidelines to always welcoming another mouth to the dinner table.

As the children grew up, Janet started a career at McCallum Jewelers in the Shoppers Mall, where she loved helping people pick out special jewelry to mark the important moments in their lives. After retirement, she enjoyed knitting and provided many blankets, toques, and scarves to various charities over the years.

Throughout her life, Janet had many happy trips visiting her sisters and their families in Pachaug Pond, CT. Never a fan of heights, she was very content to hold her smallest grandchildren while the rest of the family enjoyed the rides at Disneyworld. She loved her Thursday lunches with the girls and the occasional wager on a horse race. She also loved cooking for the family, providing hundreds of Sunday dinners, right up until this fall.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Julia; her sisters, Carol Seaman and Bette Beam; her former husband Doug; and her daughter, Tracey.

Left to mourn are her children, Greg Steeves, Melanie (Gene) Guentert, and Michael Steeves (Jil Simmons); her grandchildren, Adam (Ashley) Moore, Megan (Todd) Newell, Eric Guentert, Georgia Steeves, and Sam Steeves; and her three great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

A Celebration of Janet’s Life will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, Brandon, Manitoba.

Memorial donations may be made in honour of Janet’s six decades of support of high school football, to the Tri-High School Football Fund at the Friends of Education, c/o Brandon School Division, 1031 6th St. Brandon MB R7A 4K3.
