SONYA YALOWSKY

November 12, 1926 - November 11, 2023

With great sadness we announce the passing of Sonya Yalowsky at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, one day shy of her 97th birthday.

She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Bernice Chorkaway; her husband of 65 years, Alexander Yalowsky; and her sister Lillian Harland of White Rock, BC.

She will be forever lovingly remembered by her children, Neil (Diane) of Surrey BC and Andrea (Dave) of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Michael (Stephanie), Richard and Tiffany (Colin); and great-grandchildren, Hudson and Ella.

Mom was born and grew up in Winnipeg’s North End. After graduating from Sir Issac Newton School, she worked at Ashdown’s Department Store until she met then married Alex in 1949.

Together they built their family home on Churchill Drive with a beautiful river view. Here she was selfishly dedicated to being a full-time mother to her two children, encouraging and supporting us through our achievements. Later on she and Dad moved to The Canoe Club Condos where they lived the remainder of their lives, while still maintaining a scenic view of the Red River. Although her greatest joy came from her family, she had other varied interests. Mom was a skilled bridge player and hosted countless tournaments over the years. Her love of gardening was evident every summer by a yard blooming with flowers and manicured shrubs. She was passionate about art and music and greatly enjoyed attending performances at the Manitoba Opera. She was an avid reader and was particularly fond of historical biographies. Countless Christmases and family gatherings were made extra special thanks to her attention to detail and her fabulous cooking skills. Over the years both Mom and Dad spent many happy summers at the family cottages helping us to create lasting memories. First at the cabin they built in Lakeshore Heights near Grand Beach, then later at Gimli on the lakefront.

In accordance with Mom’s wishes cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be buried alongside her husband in Winnipeg at a private family gathering at a later date.
