ROBERT DOUGLAS ORR

October 12, 1933 – November 25, 2023

On Saturday, November 25, 2023, Bob died peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre surrounded by love. Until he was admitted to hospital for Covid and other infections, he enjoyed being at home, watching the construction out in front of the sunroom windows and reading, reading, reading...

Bob was born October 12, 1933, in Ladner, BC, to Scottish immigrant parents. His sister Jean predeceased him at age 88. Bob was very proud of his Scottish heritage, and in 1976 he and his wife Helen made a trip to Scotland where he met his relatives.

In 1960, Bob met and married Helen, a teacher; a marriage that spanned 63 years. He credits her with travel experiences to Europe and warm winter retreats.

After ten years in the RCAF, Bob joined Canada Post as an inside worker. He retired in 1993. After acquiring his private pilot’s license in 1983 he began working with CASARA, a national search and rescue team. Lawn bowling and cooking classes provided relaxation and a change of pace.

Building and carpentry genes were part of Bob’s desire to build as soon as possible. So, he created the family home and outbuildings, and was forever planning new projects, fencing, corrals, hay shelter and paddocks to accommodate 20 years raising thoroughbred horses. And the dogs, how he loved and spoiled the dogs, and the foals! And the exotic pheasants.

Bob also loved to watch things grow. He developed a large garden featuring all his favorite vegetables, although his wife did not appreciate the snakes! Nevertheless, he put down dozens of canned and frozen vegetables; added to that he baked many loaves of healthy bread, and blueberry clafouti.

A devoted member and supporter of Knox United Church, Bob served on the property and finance committees. He enjoyed church music almost as much as the usual Sunday lunch.

A Funeral Service will take place at Knox United Church, 451 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Craig Miller to officiate. A reception to follow at the church. A private family interment will take place prior to the service.

Donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Brandon Humane Society. Flowers are gratefully declined.
