NIKOLAJ (NICK) LAW

Nikolaj (Nick) Law passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba at the age of 87 years.

Dad was born on November 18, 1936 in Mine Centre, Ontario to Doris and John Walter Law Sr. He was the third of five children.

Nick attended school in Mine Centre, Ontario where he lived with his family. At the age of 14 he began working on the railway as a water boy alongside his dad and older half-brother, John Jr. Although he would hold other jobs he would return to CN Railway, proving to be his life’s work. Over the years he would move his family throughout Ontario to Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba before settling in Brandon.

On April 9, 1955 at the young age of 17, Nick married his life partner Joyce Elsie Kearney of Rainy River, Ontario. Who was also only 17. Together they had four children; Marie, Dianne, David and Jacqueline.

Nick retired from the CNR in 1993 after 40 years of service. He held many positions over the years, happily retiring as a Roadmaster in Rivers.

Over the next 10 years he would help out on his son-in-law George’s farm. He enjoyed those years very much and would always have a story to tell about his day on the farm. Over the years he would talk about those days with a smile.

Dad is survived by his son-in-law, Lorne; children, Dianne (George), David (Leona) and Jacqueline (Murray); grandchildren, Sheena, Courtney, Ashley, Nickolas, Brittany, Allan and Lilliane; great-grandchildren, Maddison, Serena, Peyton, Samantha and Reia; sister, Doris, brother-in-law, Frank and sisters-in-law, Theresa and Kathleen.

He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years Joyce; eldest daughter, Marie; grandson, Adam; parents, Doris and Walter Sr., mother and father-in-law, Mary and Ezra Kearne; brother, Mike; half-brother, John Jr.; sister, Margaret and brothers-in-law, Patrick and Mick.

The family would like to thank Dr. Moller and Dr. Minders for such great care of Dad over the last eight months. To the nurses and health care aides, we appreciate all that you did for Dad. Your kindness towards him will never be forgotten.

A time of visitation will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place at Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Kim Lewarne as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Allan Heslip, Nickolas Law, Lorne Heslip, Murray Hiller, Dick

Barrett and Bruce Clements. Honorary pallbearers are Flynn Warburton, Don Pendus and George Oliver.

We would like to give special thanks to Diane Brake, for stopping in with coffee just to check in on him. He looked forward to it and enjoyed it very much. Dick Barrett for your help when I needed to take Dad to the doctor, helping with odd chores Dad would find and just being a good friend. Of course your visits with coffee. Flynn Warburton for your visits and phone calls meant so much to Dad. He always a smile after his conversations with you. Bruce Clements, Dad always looked forward to Sunday morning coffee with you. It has been a highlight of his week for more than 30 years. You were a good friend to him. Also, thank you to everyone who took the time to call or message during this difficult time.
