NIRMALA SHIRLEY KINGSLEY

(nee RANA)

Shirley, aged 72 years, peacefully passed away on the morning of November 21, 2023, at the Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg with her husband and daughter by her side.

Shirley is survived by her husband John, sons, Robert (Kathleen), Frederick (Jennifer) and daughter Jennifer; grandchildren, MacKenna Rana and Kara Paige. She is also survived by her sisters, Pawitra (Madhukar), Sunita (Manoj), and Joana (Narendra), and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Dilli P. and Lalita Rana and her siblings Nanda Chettri and Bir B. Rana.

Shirley was born in Kalimpong, West Bengal, India on October 21, 1951. Shirley and John, along with their three little children, arrived in Canada on April 28, 1975. They made their home in Kenora, ON, for 30 years and on retirement in 2005 they moved to Winnipeg, MB.

Shirley loved cooking, gardening, music, fishing, and her famous dinners with friends where she would cook up a storm. She loved to knit and sew and worked for several years at the Fashion Fabrics in Kenora after her children were older. Back in Nepal, she was a teacher at the Adarsh Vidya Mandir School before leaving for Canada. Shirley’s greatest love was for her family, John her loving husband of 56 years, her three children and her two granddaughters.

Back in 2009 Shirley had a successful kidney transplant with her daughter Jenn being the donor. During the past few years Shirley lived with chronic back pain which slowed her down physically. She survived breast cancer back in 2012, however, it suddenly re-emerged and took us all by surprise. Through all her ups and downs with her health, the strength of how she faced the challenges were heroic. Never once complaining or feeling sorry for herself as she continued to always make sure that others were being taken care of first.

In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday December 9, 2023, at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 748 Keewatin St, Winnipeg with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memory of Nirmala (Shirley) Kingsley to CancerCare Manitoba at www.cancercare.mb.ca
