On November 29, Phyllis Joyce Aitken passed away peacefully at the age of 96.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Anita Aitken; her sister-in-law Betty Aitken; and her brother-in-law Bert Kroeker. She is survived by her brother Ken Aitken of Pickering, Ontario, and her sister Anita Kroeker of Winnipeg; her nephews and nieces, Brian Aitken (Cindy), George Aitken (Dawn), Chuck Kroeker (Monique), Jamie Aitken (June), Barbara Orieux, and Nancy Finlay (Rob); and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Joyce grew up in St. James and graduated from United College. After working as a private secretary, she decided to dedicate herself to a teaching career. She taught high school math in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division for many years. Her personal studies culminated with a Master's Degree in Math Education from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Joyce was an accomplished pianist who also enjoyed handbell ringing and singing in church and community choirs. She was an avid traveller, an enthusiastic member of ADK Sorority, a cross-country skier and tennis player, and a generous supporter of many charities. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.
Joyce's family is very grateful to all the wonderful staff at Home Instead Trusted Care and then West Park Manor for the excellent care she received. We are also grateful to Mary Rose Coffey and Heather Birchall for their devoted friendship to Joyce during her final years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Siloam Mission or Crescent-Fort Rouge United Church.
A Memorial Service for Joyce will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.

I will never forget the loving and kind Joyce Aitken! She was a loyal and true friend to my mother Gwenda and our family saw her frequently over the years. Joyce and my mother grew up together and remained great friends until my mom passed away in 2006. They shared a love of the teaching profession and many other great things such as travel, music and a shared history. The two of them had a lot of fun and much laughter! Joyce played the keyboard for me as I walked down the aisle (my backyard actually!) and put on a lovely shower for me. I always looked forward to seeing her at our home and admired the warm and caring friendship she had with my mom. She was there for me when I needed comfort and guidance when my mom passed. Joyce was talented, intelligent and very positive. May she rest in peace and hopefully be reunited with her close friends and family that have gone before her. - Posted by: Anne Vandenberg (Family friend ) on: Jan 08, 2024

Our condolences to the families. I didn’t have Joyce as a teacher at Sturgeon but my mother Shirley Woods and Joyce were good friends. I do believe they met at united college. They would also have played the hand bells together. - Posted by: Sandra Holder (Friend ) on: Dec 09, 2023

Miss Aitken was my grade 10 home room teacher at Silver Heights back in the early 60's and also my Math teacher. She was firm but kind and made math interesting and my favourite class of all. I became a teacher because of her influence. She will always be remembered for all that she did for her students. I have often wondered about her over the years. She lived a good life and made a positive difference in the lives of many young students. - Posted by: Judy MacKenzie nee Ross (Former student) on: Dec 09, 2023
