GLADYS TAWSE

(nee HOLLINGSWORTH)

September 11, 1926 - November 29, 2023

We are grateful to be the family of our much loved, mom, gramma, great-gramma, sister and aunt, Gladys Marion Tawse, who died quietly on November 29, 2023, at the age of 97.

Gladys was born to Jenny (Burke) and Percy Hollingsworth on the family farm in Doonside, Saskatchewan, the third of four children. Gladys, her brother, Robbie, and sisters, Jean and Evelyn, and their father, were all very musical and travelled the area around Doonside and Fairlight, SK., providing music for community events. She moved to Brandon, MB, where she met her future husband, Russ, with whom she had two children; Linda McKellar (Tawse), and Bruce. During their marriage the family moved several times and Gladys always ensured the smooth transition to each new home with calmness and humour. During their retirement years, Gladys and Russ lived in White Rock, BC, however, a few years after Russ' death, Gladys moved back to Winnipeg, where she was involved with many activities with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Throughout her long life Gladys wore many hats: Brownie leader, nurses' aide, proprietor of a hunting and fishing lodge in The Pas, MB., and, definitely not least, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She had many adventures which included trips to every continent except Antarctica - only a cancelled trip prevented her from fulfilling her dream. On her 75th birthday she went skydiving, followed closely by white water rafting and hot air ballooning.

Always physically and mentally active, her diminished mobility and independence over the past several years was a blow to her, but one she bore with her usual pragmatism and sunny outlook. In recent years she has lived with the challenges of Lewy Body dementia. When she was no longer able to live independently, she moved to Dakota House where she was very happy for over four years. Her frequent comment was, "I'm so lucky to be here where everyone watches out for each other".

Gladys moved to Vista Park Lodge in 2018 where she was very content. Our family is grateful to all the staff for the kindness, care and compassion they have shown to our mom, and to us.

Gladys was pre-deceased by her husband, Russ, her parents, Jenny and Percy Hollingsworth, her brother, Robert, sister, Evelyn Lettley, niece, Lois Ross (Lettley), Russ' parents, Alec and Elizabeth Tawse, and brothers-in-law, Tom Tawse, Fred Lettley and Bill Dunton.

Gladys is fondly remembered by her family: daughter, Linda McKellar, son, Bruce Tawse and his wife, Caryll, grandchildren, Megan Vankoughnett (Dave), Nadeen Bennett (Shawn), Daren McKellar (Lise), and Gillian Howie (Vince). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Braden (Kelsey), Ashten(KC), Reid (Camryn), Vaughn, Celeste (Owen), Chandler (Lexi), Noah, Kaleb, Emily and Liam, great-great-grandchildren, Blayke and Blaire, as well as sister, Jean Dunton, nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a family gathering will be held to honour our mom's amazing life.

Should anyone wish, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba would be appropriate.

Thank you, mom, we will miss you.
