LUIS ERNESTO MAGALHAES

September 13, 1944 - November 26, 2023

Luis Ernesto Magalhães, 79, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Sunday, November 26, 2023. A man of unwavering Catholic faith, he was a devoted husband of 49 years to his wife, TaíTaí; a loving, dedicated and proud father to daughters, Ana (Ian), Cristina (Russ), Guida (Joel), Luisa (Mark) and Connie (Shawn). Gentle, humble, and always ready with a joke, he adored his 13 grandchildren, often proclaiming they were his greatest life achievement. Affectionately known as Avô, his legacy lives on in them: Aiden, Riley, Meaghan, Téa, Keenan, Kyla, Owen, Jonty, Adriana, Gabriela, Will, Violet and Catarina.

Luis was a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, a member of Casa do Minho Portuguese cultural center, and volunteer at the Victoria General Hospital.

Predeceased by his wife, TaíTaí; parents, Margarida and António Magalhães; and sister Margarida; Luis is survived by his younger siblings, Ana Maria (Rui), Inês, and Eduardo (Salomé); nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

May Luis finally be at peace in the garden of the Lord.

A funeral mass will be held at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg, Friday, December 8, 1:30 p.m., with a viewing prior to the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada for research and care for those living with dementia.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • We have known the Magalhaes' family for many years. When our kids were small, Joan had met Tai Tai through a Y-neigbours group. Later at a social evening for the Y-neighbours and their spouses I had met Luis. After we talked about our interests and found out we both enjoyed playing bridge, Luis asked me if I would like to join the men’s Bridge group that he had organized. Little did I anticipate that I would still be with this group and a couple of its founding members close to forty years later. Over the years Luis and I would play racquetball and tennis together and the Bridge group would often arrange dinners with our spouses. About twenty years ago when Luis took on his last assignment at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, we visited him and Tai Tai for about three weeks and they showed us many of the sites in Portugal. We very much miss our friends Luis and Tai Tai. - Posted by: Michael Saxton (Friend) on: Dec 30, 2023

  • Luis was a lovely man. My condolences to his family who we knew well as children. Many, many happy Christmas eves were spent together with amazing food and we kids used to put on concerts for our parents by the fire. I used to love visits to their house Luis was always a kind man and in later years I enjoyed my visits home for family gathering to which he was always welcome. We had such interesting talks about life and European politics. I’ll miss not seeing him next time I’m home. XxX - Posted by: Liz Falconer (Holland) (Friend) on: Dec 17, 2023

  • Luis was a dear friend and faithful, prayerful Catholic Christian who urges us from heaven to follow him there. He loved his wife and daughters and their families in an exemplary way. I used to visit him from other Canadian cities, and he was generous to a fault with me and with other Opus Dei members. He cultivated friendships. He will be sorely missed. He always had a joke on his lips and a smile on his face. Besides English and Portuguese, he spoke good Spanish, and perhaps other languages too! He was a good Samaritan. - Posted by: Father Fernando Mignone (friend) on: Dec 06, 2023
