COLIN HUGHES

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Hughes on Sunday December 3, 2023, at Lions Personal Care Home after a long illness.

Colin was born in South Africa on September 19, 1946, and he is survived by Marjorie, his beloved wife of 48 years. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Louise (Gerald), his son Edward (Samantha) and his five precious grandchildren Cyrus, Kaya, Ivy, Renee and Charlotte. He is also survived by brothers Richard (Noreen) David (Pamela) Brian (Linda) his sister Lana and many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Colin was predeceased by his parents Charles and Joan Hughes.

From an early age Colin was interested in wildlife of all kinds and he enjoyed every opportunity to spend time outdoors enjoying nature. Colin’s passion for the outdoors turned into his career path with the Manitoba government working in wildlife, fisheries and water quality management. Colin’s field work took him all over the province, there’s hardly a lake, river or stream in northern or southern Manitoba that he did not visit by air, by boat or by road. Colin retired in 2007 from the Manitoba Department of Water Stewardship with over 30 years of devoted government service. Upon his retirement Colin and Marjorie built a country retreat in the Awanipark area of Pinawa. There Colin was able to hike and paddle, watch the birds at the feeder or just potter around outside.

Colin was always ready with a joke or a story, and he loved to laugh and play with his children and his grandchildren. Colin also had a passion for music and would always love to put on a classic rock and roll record.

There will be a reception held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre 3030 Notre Dame Ave. Wednesday January 3, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. to honour Colin’s life.

Donations in memory of Colin may be made to Fort Whyte Alive or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

  • Hi Marjorie. I was so sorry to be unable to attend Colin service. I have such fond memories of working with Colin in the Water Quality section. He truly loved his work, was great at his job, and was always respectful and helpful to his colleagues. I will always remember his wonderful laugh. I’m glad you had so many good years together, and I’m hoping that in time, your wonderful memories of Colin will provide you comfort. Sending caring thoughts to you and your family ♥️ Sharon Gurney. - Posted by: Sharon Gurney (Colleague) on: Jan 04, 2024

  • My deepest condolences Margorie to you and your family for your loss. Many fond memories of Colin when we were in school at Saskatoon. We were a close group at that time and had a lot of good times as young people will do. All my best. Ian MIlliken - Posted by: Ian milliken (Former class mate) on: Jan 02, 2024

  • It was a good time going to what was the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Science in Saskatoon 1(1965-1967) with Colin. He was a good friend as we both accepted jobs in Winnipeg upon graduation and spending time together in 1969 as we both worked in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Colin was able to return to Saskatoon for a few Renewal Resources class reunions which allowed some reminiscing of days in school and at work. Condolences to you Marjorie and your family. Thank you for letting us know of Colin’s passing. - Posted by: Roger and Sandy Pederson (Students) on: Jan 02, 2024

  • I remember Colin very well as a helpful and dedicated worker who helped me with getting the Water Quality data system shifted off mainframe to office based computers. He was always supportive and good spirited and I enjoyed his help and his contribution to Water Quality in Manitoba. I saw him as a friend and am sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Mack Campbell (co-worker) on: Dec 17, 2023

  • It was sad to read this. I had the pleasure of working with Colin for a couple of summers (73,74) with what was then called, Mines, Resources and Environmental Management. He just loved the job that allowed him to be outdoors a great deal of the time. Wonderful fellow! My condolences to his his friends and family. Rest in Peace Colin.
