SHEILA MARY JOAN AUSTMAN (LAWRENCE)
Date of Passing: Dec 05, 2023
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHEILA MARY JOAN AUSTMAN (LAWRENCE)
Sheila passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 81.
She is survived by daughter Sharron Lawrence, son Christian Lawrence, brothers Nelson Robertson of Victoria, BC, and Jack (Brenda) Robertson of Winnipeg, MB, as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband Don Austman in 1989, her sister Louise in 1990, and parents May and Les Robertson in 2010.
Sheila was born and raised in Winnipeg, the first born of four children. Though she lived in other Canadian provinces during her younger years, she returned to her hometown of Winnipeg with her children, met the love of her life, Don, and remained a Winnipegger until her passing.
Sheila cherished time with family. Her younger brother, Nelson, admired his big sister as they grew up together. It was her other, and younger brother, Jack that began the endeared term of “Audie” when referring to his older sister and thought of her as his “other mom”. Sheila always kept the lines of communication open and was thoughtful in providing gifts, beautifully boxed and wrapped. She enjoyed the opportunity to host family dinners and gatherings. Christmas was always a special time within our family and Sheila was a big part of that.
Sheila’s life was not without challenges but she “muddled through somehow” and moved on. She loved her life and was always well engaged whether that be figure skating, cross country skiing, recording books for the blind, yoga, involvement with her church, and dancing, to name but a few. Dancing was a theme throughout her lifetime which included line dancing for many years right up until her passing. She was well remembered for dancing on more than a few tabletops.
One of Sheila’s greatest joys were all the relationships she gained along the way and her many wonderful friends and neighbours, far too numerous to name in this passage. If you were such a person in Sheila’s life, please know she loved you very much and valued those relationships very dearly.
Sheila could also be very private and humble and in accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will not be a service.
An obituary seems far too brief to begin to capture the essence of the subject, but I can say in all truthfulness that all my mother ever gave me is everything I am. Hers was a life well lived and she will be missed.

Sheila and I are email buddies. I could not go to bed at night until I received Sheila's midnight offerings; some jokes, some dance videos, some words of wisdom. My returns were not as predictable but I would often think, "Sheila will like this" and zip it off to her. I miss her. I keep waiting to hear the "ping" of my phone as my midnight pick-me-up hits my in box. Chris and Sharon did a good job in the limited space of an obituary in capturing the essence of Sheila. Condolences to Chris and Sharon and the Robertson families. RIP Sheila. - Posted by: Bill Coe (Friend and past co-worker at MPI) on: Dec 11, 2023

Sheila was my stepmum and was a cherished member of my family. Despite my dad's passing many years ago, we remained in contact and she was included in many family gatherings. I loved her sense of humour, her kind heart, and how she was so accepting of all of us, despite sometimes being overwhelmed by the number of Dad's offspring. I know I speak for all of my siblings when I say she will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Pamela Austman (Stepdaughter) on: Dec 10, 2023

I have lived beside Sheila for the last 12 years…an amazing neighbour…. We travelled to many line dance classes together…she tried teaching me new steps..sometimes in the parking garage…down the hallway in our condo building and a few times at her place….so we could watch the steps on the computer……she never gave up on me! Out to Folklorama to many pavilions …outdoor concerts in the park! She could back her car into a space to park …that she never tried to teach me….there was no use! Sheila had a spark in her eyes always….and an amazing quick wit….. Her death was so sudden and so unexpected….. Condolences to all her family and friends…..for we will truly miss her. I hope you are dancing up a storm! - Posted by: Catherine Robertson (Neighbour) on: Dec 09, 2023

Sheila was very supportive when my husband was ill. Visiting us at home and in the hospital, and long term care. She loved to go out for lunch or dinner-always a fun time. I will miss our emails and our discussions on some of the subjects. I will see you again my friend. Judy. - Posted by: Judy Klimack (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2023

I am so very sorry to read of Sheila's passing and offer my sincere condolences. My parents and her parents were friends for many years, living in St. James. I knew your mother through my parents and hers. She was just always an upbeat person, very sociable. Your many memories will always keep her alive in your heart and your mind. - Posted by: Veronica Cormier(Gall) (Friend of Sheila's parents) on: Dec 09, 2023

I had the privilege of being Sheila's minister for ten years. I remember her as an intelligent, insightful and thoughtful person who cared deeply about the church. I am saddened to hear of her passing and deeply regret that there will be no service celebrating her life, sharing memories with others, and thanking God for the gift of her 81 years. - Posted by: Colin Peterson (Minister) on: Dec 09, 2023
