Doris passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday December 13, 2023 at the age of 103.
Her memory will live on through her surviving family; son Glenn (Anne), daughter in law Gloria Dutchuk, grandchildren Matthew, Cameron and Alexandra and great-grandchildren Carly, Taylor and Jaxson.
Doris was the youngest child of Ed and Sarah Hurley of Chater, Manitoba. She was predeceased by all her siblings; Clarence, Mildred, Velva, Olive, Ella, Ethel and Harry. She was also predeceased by husband Burt (1953), grandson Michael (2000), sons Ralph (2020) and Ron (2022).
Left at the age of 16 by deceased parents, Doris finished her education in Winnipeg living with her older sister Milly and then returning to Brandon to attend the nursing program at Brandon Hospital in September 1940. After graduating in June 1943, Doris nursed in the United States of America for six months then returned to Canada and continued to practice nursing until marrying the love of her life Herbert (Bert) Jones, at the end of World War II on September 30, 1945.
They had three sons, Glenn and twins Ronald and Ralph. When Bert passed away on May 20, 1953, Doris and the boys moved to Winnipeg making St James their new home.
Her career in Winnipeg started by working at the Women’s Center for two years. Doris then went on to work at the City of Winnipeg Public Health for approximately the next 30 years.
Doris and other nurses spent many hours after work to form a union for City and Municipal nurses. The outcome to this was the first nurse’s union for all of Manitoba, which is still active today (Manitoba Nurses Union). An accomplishment she was proud of.
At age 63, Doris retired and enjoyed travelling all over the world making new lifelong friends. Always bringing a story back to share with friends and family.
The family would like to thank Ivanka and her team for the care they provided for Doris.
Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
