Miriam Fowke (nee Clark) of Brandon, MB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Valleyview Personal Care Home.
She was born on January 11, 1925, in Brandon. Miriam grew up on a farm in Daly Municipality where her lifelong love for animals became apparent at an early age. She particularly enjoyed riding horses. She also developed a love for caring for people while young. This eventually led to her applying for and being accepted into the first Practical Nursing class in Manitoba at the Central School for Practical Nurses. Miriam had given her heart to the Lord at an early age while attending a camp meeting with her mother and sister. After gaining some experience in nursing, she enrolled in Western Bible College in Winnipeg and upon graduation there worked in children's ministries.
It was at Western that Miriam met her husband, Walter Fowke. Together they ministered in several communities in Northern Ontario and Manitoba. Miriam continued to work full time as a practical nurse while helping Walter and raising her children. The desire for more learning lead to enrollment in the Registered Nursing program at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg in 1973. From Winnipeg, she and Walter moved to and ministered at churches in Ontario, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. Wherever they were, she continued to nurse in hospitals and nursing homes in whatever capacity she could. While working in Lions Head, ON, the staff often joked that she delivered more babies than the doctors did. Together, Walter and Miriam pastored for over 50 years in various churches in the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. She was an energetic, positive influence in her family and with those she encountered in nursing and ministry. She will be missed.
Miriam is survived by sons Mark (Dorine) and Earl (Loraine), son-in-law Darryl Paddock, nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Walter, son Evan, and daughter Mavis (Paddock).
A private family funeral will be held in January.
If so desired, memorial gifts may be made to Manhattan Beach Retreat Centre, Box 62 Ninette, Manitoba, ROK 1RO, or ShareWord Global Canada (formerly The Gideons International in Canada), PO Box 3619, Guelph, ON, N1H 7A2.
