Gerald passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on December 25, 2023 at the Gimli Betel Home, at the age of 71.
He is survived by his mother Ingibjorg (Inga) Johnson; son Jeff (Joanne); daughter Shannon Ireland (Chris); grandchildren, Joshua, Madison, Ceanna, and Aidan. He also leaves brother-in-law Michael Michaluk, and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father Stefan Johnson; father-in-law Anthony Pomerenski; mother-in-law Minnie Pomerenski; beloved wife Shirley; and recently his sister Shirley Michaluk.
Dad was born June 19, 1952 in Gimli. Dad learned the value of hard work at an incredibly early age where he would spend many hours on Lake Winnipeg as a commercial fisherman both in the fall and winter seasons. Dad later joined his father at Lake Winnipeg Boat Works building and constructing fiberglass fishing boats, then venturing off to start his own business Gimli Boat Works where he manufactured aluminum fishing boats. Dad’s proudest accomplishment was winning dealer of the year for his sales with Evinrude motors that awarded him and mom a trip to the Bahamas. Continuing with his entrepreneurial spirit dad opened Gimli Video where he operated that for many years.
Dad was proud of his Icelandic Heritage, and you would often see him boiling his rullupylsa for Isendingadagurinn and would serve for August long weekend. Gerald loved his grandchildren. He was a proud grandpa who would attend his grandchildren’s sporting activities and could not wait to play a joke or prank on someone.
Thanks to the Selkirk Betel Home and Gimli Betel Home, for taking such good care of Dad during his short stay. Also thanks to dad’s family, Dr. Ade Adegbesan for his care throughout the years.
A private family service will take place at a later date.
