JOHN JONES

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Harry Jones on December 21, 2023 at Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 85 years. He will be greatly missed by many who’s lives he touched over the years.

John will be sadly missed by his wife of 54 years, Anne and his two loving children, Greg and Michael Jones, (Tannis and Dillon Fleming) of Winnipeg. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brother and sister, Alan Jones and Dorothy Daly (Vivian). John’s memory will be cherished by Roy and Annie Peckham, Maureen Arbik, Carol Hanna, Colin Peckham, Pam Faland, Martyn Daly (Carolyn), Stephen Daly, Jane Van Harrewyn (Carl), Melanie McMahon and Susan Pinkos.

John was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Edith Jones; sister Valerie Pinkos and Margaret Johnstone and Allen (Butch) Wilson.

John was born September 12, 1937, in Wallasey in the UK. He emigrated to Canada as a young man and embraced the Canadian lifestyle and love for the great outdoors immediately. John and Anne’s beautiful log cabin on the shores of Lake Winnipeg was a source of much joy for themselves and friends and family alike. John’s quick wit and ready laugh made many days and evenings a joy to experience. On the many trips to the dump, our John would frequently return with a larger load than he left with which was very much a part of his charm.

John remained an avid Liverpool F. C. (rubbish) fan throughout his life and enjoyed his football immensely. He was a top-notch bowler and dart player as well. He was always great fun to be around and will be greatly missed although his legacy of embracing the joys of life will carry on.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I am deeply saddened to hear of Uncle John's passing. Uncle John, along with all the Jones family "adopted " our family into theirs, I have never not known them. Many years of Christmases with tables laden with food and presents under the tree. Summers were spent at the beach and the boys were always having a game of soccer. Uncle John was always laughing and joking, he was enjoyable to be around. I will miss you Uncle John. - Posted by: Lorraine Kellner (McElroy) (Lifelong "Uncle" John) on: Oct 16, 2024

  • I met John a Sunday in 1974 in at St James Lanes in the Senior Mes league. Went fishing with him and even though me and the boys were not the best dart players we ended up in A Division. We had a good time win or lose. Also went to his cottage on various weekends with Roy and Colin. Playing horseshoes and the odd beer. John was a good friend. RIP old buddy. - Posted by: Glenn Morrison (Friend) on: Dec 31, 2023

  • John was one of the kindest most thoughtful people I have ever met, always smiling and joking with his usual happy demeanor. John and Anne were a huge part of my life when I arrived in Canada from England in 1974. I will always think of John with a smile on my face and love in my heart, he was one of the best and I will miss him so much. Until we meet again cousin.
