Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRONALD JAMES AUSTIN
Peacefully, on December 29, 2023 Ron slipped away at Victoria General Hospital.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 31 years, Norma; his three children Pat (Melanie), Ken (Nueng) and Linda; and his three stepchildren Colleen (Dave), Mark (Heather) and Trevor (Audrey). As well he leaves a legacy of ten grandchildren, Chris, Katelyn, Cody, Zac, Alex, Jess, Julianna, Nathan, Peerada and Malina. Ron was predeceased by his mother Edith Austin and father Ronald Sr. We know that he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Ron was born to Edith and Ronald Austin Sr. and raised with Edith and his grandparents in Regina, SK. In 1967 he graduated from the University of Guelph with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. In 1974, he completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Pathology from the University of Saskatchewan. The bulk of his career was spent working for the Province of Manitoba as a veterinary pathologist in Winnipeg. He retired in 2003.
Earlier in his adult life Ron was married to Jean and they had three children; Pat, Ken and Linda.
Ron’s love of animals extended to his hobbies, and his favourite was bird-watching. Many family dinners were interrupted by a call for a rare bird alert. Trips he and Norma took were often planned around birding locations. He was always the first person that we brought a new furry family member to meet or whom we called when we needed advice for them.
Ron married the love of his life on September 25, 1992 at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Winnipeg. Ron and Norma spent the next 31 years focusing on their new combined family with six adult children. They made family their priority and loved spending time with their children and grandchildren. They attended weddings, countless concerts, recitals and sporting events. Ron was always excited to hear about our adventures and life events. He was always willing to listen when we needed to talk.
The family would like to thank Dr. J. Brian Sharkey for his years of faithful care as well as the nurses Ronna, Julia, Monika and Kathryn at the Victoria General Hospital for providing dignified care at the end of his life.
A memorial service will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Winnipeg, 200 Dalhousie Drive on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. and livestreamed at epiphany.ca. All are welcome.
Donating to charity was always important to Ron and he took much care each year picking his favourite charities to donate. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Ron and I shared a lot in common throughout all the years we were friends. Besides the same birth date of 20 March we both had a number of favourite professors at the U of Sask Regina Campus. We also had a mutual fascination and joy for science and nature especially birds. Roberta and I have so many fond memories of Ron and Norma while chatting and sometimes just savouring the sunshine from a park bench at Kings Park. RIP gentle friend. - Posted by: Lewis Cocks (Long term friends of Ron and Norma) on: Jan 05, 2024
