DR. IAN ROBERT HAMILTON, Ph.D.

July 1, 1932 - December 30, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ian Robert Hamilton, peacefully in his sleep at the Lions Manor Personal Care Home.

Ian will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Anne (Chris), David and Stephen (Barbara), stepdaughters Kathy Elminshawi, Sally (Bruce) Lein and Penny (Bob) Gilbertson, grandchildren Josh, Jamie, Zachary, Lucas, Robyn, Sarah, Amy (Joe), Erik (Katy), Ali, Beth (Alistair), Kate, and many other relatives and friends. Ian was predeceased by his beloved wife Geraldine Hamilton.

Ian was born in Fort Frances and spent his early life in various parts of Ontario where his father David worked for the Ontario Provincial Police. Ian was the first in his family to attend university and went on to earn a Ph.D. and attended the Oxford University for post doctorate work.

Ian worked at the University of Manitoba and had a long and productive career as a professor and researcher. Ian was celebrated as an academic and received distinguished degrees from the University of Manitoba, Laval University and Lund University.

Ian had a love of nature, gardening, music, good food, travel, and reading which he shared with his family and friends. Ian had a brilliant mind and was always interested in new ideas, current events and most notably the people in his life. He could always be counted on to do an exemplary job in any endeavour he took on. He was a man who not only enjoyed the rich experiences that life offered, but also the simpler ones like a half-moon hotdog, opera on CBC or a dip in the lake.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Lions Manor Personal Care Home for their exceptional care of Ian over the years. A special note of gratitude and thanks goes to Erin Savage, of Xtra Mile Home Care, who provided such loving, dedicated support and friendship to Ian and his family over the last six years.

A memorial service with a reception to follow to celebrate Ian’s life will be held on January 7, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in honour of Ian Hamilton.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I first met Ian when he was on sabbatical leave at Porton Down in Wiltshire in the UK. Both of us were collaborating with Dr. Derek Ellwood using specialized equipment, almost unique to Porton at that time. Subsequently, Ian recruited me in 1978 to the University of Manitoba, to a position in the Dental and Medical schools. Ian and I worked and taught together for 25 years. Ian was a first class academic with an impressive mastery of his subject. Although we did not always, agree, our relationship was one of good friends and we spent much time together, lunch time coffee on Sargent and monthly lunches with him and Gerry. Attending meetings together was always one of the best experiences, thanks to Ian's enjoyment of food and drink and his sense of fun. Notable were our basement Xmas parties when we all contributed to the food. During covid and when Ian became ill we moved to Ontario and lost our close contact. Eileen and I send our condolences to Ian's family and want to emphasize his role in bringing us and our two daughters to Canada for a fine life. The time spent in the basement laboratories working with Ian remains one of the best times of my life. Thank you Ian. • My deepest condolences to the Hamilton Family. Dr. Hamilton was my MSc. and pHD supervisor from 1986-1995. He was an excellent mentor and friend and was my inspiration to become a professor. Ian always was an exemplary leader. In the nine years I spent working with him I had the pleasure of enjoying many great times. In addition to teaching me the rigours or science he always emphasized the fun aspects of an academic career. We shared many adventures in interesting places where we continued to meet until his retirement. I shared his love of food, drink and fun and will continue to toast and celebrate his life and contributions with his many, many friends in academia. Rest in Peace Dr. H. You will be missed. - Posted by: Dennis Cvitkovitch (Graduate Student) on: Jan 04, 2024
