AKIO SATO

1927 - 2023

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Akio Sato on November 11, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 96.

Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his children: Diane Sato of Vancouver BC, Wayne (Vivian) Sato, Karen (David) Labram and Glenn (Diana) Sato all of Winnipeg; grandchildren MacKenzie (Steven) Dyck, Hailey, Easton (Sarah), Aysia, Jaden, Tache, Nathan, Lucas, and aunt Tai (Jishiro d.) Sato of Toronto.

Akio was predeceased by his parents - father, Shinji and mother, Masae (Nee Tamura), sisters Nobu (Ken d.) Ellis and Amie (John d.) Roller.

Akio grew up in Steveston BC. During the war his family was relocated to Manitoba. After serving in the Canadian Army, Akio started working for the CBC. It was in Winnipeg where he met Mariko - the love of his life for 67 years, and together they raised four children in Calgary, later moving to Winnipeg. After a 33 - year career as a technician with the CBC, Akio took early retirement.

Dad was our “Renaissance Man”. He was one of the smartest people we knew. He was a perfectionist and loved logic and brain teaser games. He took interest in a wide variety of subjects. He was a master of origami, proudly displaying his creations at Folklorama, a gifted artisan of beaded jewelry, a passionate bridge player, a pinball wizard, houtou chef, Rubik’s Cube champion, crossword and sudoku enthusiast. And no one took the Free Press Word Jumble more seriously.

Dad also loved to entertain family. Dad was a master storyteller and he loved to hold lottery ticket give aways at Christmas, and whatever else he could do, to make the holidays a little more special, in his own way.

Dad, you were the one we looked up to, and you never disappointed – what more could we ask for? Thank you for being “one of a kind” and thank you for keeping us entertained and loved. We will miss you dearly and we will carry you in our hearts forever.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful staff at River Ridge Retirement Residence. Mom and Dad were proud to host many family get togethers and dinners at River Ridge and they received excellent care and attention. The family would also like to thank the nurses and caregivers at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg and the Kildonan Care Home, for making Dad’s final year comfortable.

In lieu of flowers kindly consider a donation to the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba, 180 McPhillips St, Winnipeg, MB R3E 2J9.

As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Glen Eden Funeral Home with no formal service to be held.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Wayne/Diane/Karen/Glenn and family: our thoughts and condolences go out to you. I always thought it was really cool that your dad worked at CBC (even got a control room tour once!). But clearly, the richest part of his life was later when had time to share with the growing family, and accomplish so much! - Posted by: Dean and Kelly (Friends of the family) on: Jan 13, 2024
