BEVERLEY ANNE SMITH

September 17, 1950 - January 16, 2024

Beverley Anne Smith (nee Hackenschmidt), our beloved mother, baba, sister and friend took her last breath on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, with loved ones near.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alf and Grace Hackenschmidt (nee Dushnisky), and special brother-in-law Colin Hardy.

Bev is survived by her son, Ryan Smith and grandson Finn Smith of Warman, SK, sister Brenda Hardy and Ryan’s Dad – Randy Smith of Brandon plus many cousins and friends.

Bev was born into a loving family on September 17, 1950, in a world filled with wonder and hope. She was adored and was the centre of attention until her sister Brenda was born in 1953. The family unit increased with the arrival of Dad’s father who moved in and was the perfect babysitter. Bev was his little helper.

She was an adventurous girl and made friends easily. At an early age it was evident that she had a certain flair for fashion and loved all things that sparkled. Her favorite pastime was shopping unless hanging out with her best pals – Cheryl and Judy and going to dances at the Park CC. They shared so many memories, fun times, secrets, sleepovers and lots of laughter.

Bev attended King George School, Earl Haig and BCI. After grade 11, she decided to enroll at Assiniboine Community College for a Clerk Typist course. Her work ethic and eagerness to do a good job impressed the instructors and she was offered a position after her graduation.

While all of this was going on, romance began to blossom with a certain young man – Randy Smith. Soon wedding bells rang out on October 3, 1970. They purchased their first home in 1971 and she resided there until her passing. It is not a coincidence that the address was on Elviss Cres as Elvis Presley was her first love.

Bev’s heart grew and love knew no bounds when they welcomed their son Ryan on December 13, 1977. Always a planner and devoted Mom, she quickly took on the task of baking themed birthday cakes, sewing Halloween costumes, attending soccer games etc. Ryan was her pride and joy. She fully supported his choice to be a firefighter but wished he could have been closer to home. With the birth of Finn on June 30, 2015, a new chapter began. Bev was the doting Baba. Finn was a loving child – giving Bev much needed hugs and kisses. She will be his guardian angel in heaven.

Bev took time away from work after Ryan was born and re-entered the work force at Paterson’s Law firm in 1990. She was a valued employee until her retirement after 28 years – always professional and welcoming to everyone. Some of the staff would become lifelong friends, especially Rebie and Janet.

After 1996, when she was on her own with Ryan, Bev regrouped and leaned on family – Mom and Dad, and Brenda and Colin were always there with love and support. The same was true for her close friends. These friends weathered many storms together which bonded them for life. Cheryl Chown (nee Kellington) and Judy Brownlee (nee Walters) have been with her for over 60 plus years. They were joined by Helen Scribner and Marilyn Hoad and met weekly for coffee and outings. She loved them all and looked forward to their time together. This continued right up till Bev’s passing.

It is significant that Bev’s life was filled with not only family and good friends. She was blessed with the best parents and family meant everything to her.

Through her many health issues, she remained strong, always cheerful and kind - never complaining. These last few years provided much needed healing in past relationships. We are so thankful for all the love, support, and happiness she brought into our lives. She will be in our hearts forever. We take comfort knowing you are re-united with Mom and Dad, Colin and Grandpa.

Bev lived an ordinary life, but she made an extraordinary difference in the many lives she touched. She will be missed.

A funeral service was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium.
