AUGUST GELHORN

January 1, 1931 - January 16, 2024

Peacefully, with family by his side, August passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Maples Personal Care Home.

August, to his friends and family otherwise known as “Gus” was born in Winnipeg, where he completed his high school diploma. He was employed at Archibald Brokerage, and later U.G.G. until he retired.

Gus met the love of his life June, in Rennie MB, through his sister Lucy and June’s brother Joe. Apparently, he needed a “Boot in the Ass” to get the courtship going from sister-in-law Martha. They were married November 26, 1960. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage, raised their two children and were actively involved with their two grandchildren.

Friday nights were spent bowling at the German Club with the boys. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church and took great pride serving as a lifelong choir member until its closing. He enjoyed an active social life, partying with friends and family.

He was a gifted artist doing many oil paintings, cards, and carvings. He had the competitive Gelhorn spirit! Loved playing Cribbage and teaching it to his grandchildren as well as bingo and chess.

In his later years enjoyed winter vacations to Mexico, Hawaii and Cuba. He will be forever missed by daughter Kris (Bill) and son Kent (Dianne) and grandchildren, Selena and Dayton.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Maples Care Home One West Wing for the wonderful care and attention provided to dad. It truly felt like home to him.

  • Kris, Kent, we are very sad at learning of Gus's passing. He was always fun to be around and Cameron enjoyed many years bowling with him and the boys at the German Club. Good memories. Love from Thunder Bay - Posted by: Wanda & Cameron Nicolson (Wanda's Cousin) on: Jan 21, 2024

  • Our family crossed paths with Gus over the years as Mary & Ed Deibert were close friends. Kathy sang in the choir with him and babysat Kris & Kent. He dared Mary to play the Beer Barrell Polka on the new pipe organ at Christ Lutheran Church and she did! Gus was our son Devon's confirmation mentor. Ed and he were members of the church seniors and continued their lunch dates for years later. Kris & Kent may the peace of the Lord be with you. - Posted by: Kathy & David Murdoch (Friends) on: Jan 20, 2024
