IAN ALAN WINGFIELD

1944 - 2024

After a fierce battle to cancer, Ian Alan Wingfield passed away with his family by his side on January 17, 2024.

Ian was born April 22, 1944, in London England to his mom Betty (war bride) and dad Jim (Canadian Soldier). Survived by his Wife Alda (nee Halldorsson), sister Lorraine, brother Colin and spouse Judith (Harrison), son Chris and spouse Tara (Mitchell), son Geoff and spouse Teresa (Zahariuk), grandkids Madelaine, Mitchell, London, niece Alexandra and spouse Colin (Kellan and Carrigan), and family in England.

Ian was brought to Canada in 1946 after the war ended near 2 years old. They settled in Winnipeg’s north end and spent most of his childhood on Monreith Street. He graduated from Sisler high school and attended the University of Winnipeg to earn his Bachelor of Education. He taught in a variety of settings, landing his first teaching job in Ashern, Manitoba. He then went back over to England with his wife Alda and taught in the slums of London. When they moved back to Canada, his first son Chris was born and they moved into a duplex on Clyde Road, where they remained there for 5 years, and Ian got a job teaching at Kildonan East Collegiate. He spent these years in the Canadian Army Reserve achieving the rank of Major while he worked full time.

With the arrival of their second son Geoff, they moved to their forever home on Emerson Avenue. Ian had many ties to the community including president of River East Teachers Association (RETA), as well as Vice Principal at both Miles Macdonell and River East Collegiate.

The family would like to thank the staff at Selkirk and Riverview hospitals for the excellent care and support they provided him until the end of his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.
