MARGARET JEAN MCRAE

July 12, 1930 - January 21, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Jean McRae at the age of 93 years following a brief illness.

Jean will be lovingly remembered by sons, Bruce and Don (Patricia), daughter Meredith and grandchildren, Emily and Ewan. Jean was predeceased by husband Dr. Kenneth McRae, sister Elspeth Wright and brother Newman McLenaghen.

Born and raised near Selkirk, Manitoba in Little Britain to parents, James and Katherine McLenaghen, nee Newman. At the age of 19, she tragically lost her father. James was a well-known and loved lawyer, politician and Attorney General of Manitoba.

Jean graduated from University of Manitoba in 1953 with a degree in nursing (RN) and went on to be Head Nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital. She met the love of her life, Ken, at the Winnipeg Badminton Club. In 1957, she relocated to the US to continue practicing nursing and worked alongside Ken who did post grad training. Mom recalled fondly that at this time they delivered babies together. The couple wed in 1958 and returned to Winnipeg in 1960 to raise a family and resided in River Heights. Jean and Ken were married 44 years and the two admittedly made a great team. Ken later founded the Child Protection Clinic and championed child advocacy and child protective rights in Canada.

Jean was a devoted hockey and ringette Mom, amazing cook and baker, an expert seamstress and loved to play tennis and bridge. A fortunate few of us were on the receiving end of her many talents. Over the years, Jean was recognized by the Health Sciences Centre for outstanding achievements in volunteerism. We treasure joyful memories of summers spent together at the cottage at Poplar Bay Lake of the Woods and numerous family ski and beach vacations. Jean was a special and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbour. Her loving and caring nature, infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humour will be missed by all who knew her.

Per Mom's wishes, there will be a graveside service to be announced at a later date.

Mom, you will be forever in our hearts.

We have been so very blessed

to have had you in our lives.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • On behalf of the WGH/HSC Nursing Alumni we extend our sincere condolences to Jean’s family and friends on her recent passing. Jean’s obituary speaks to her close relationships and her interests and talents. Bridge, one of these many interests, started during her nurses’ training. Her 1953A classmates recall Jean, along with other bridge enthusiasts, rushing from lunch to the “smoker lounge”, covering their nurses’ uniforms with their housecoats, and squeezing in a few hands of bridge. May Jean’s family and friends find comfort in all she was and all she accomplished in her life.
