DOLORES JEWEL MORTON

July 12, 1931 - December 27, 2023

Dolores Jewel Morton died peacefully on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 92 years. Dolores (Do), forever in our hearts, is greatly missed and will be remembered lovingly by her family and friends.

Born on July 12, 1931, in Montreal, Quebec to parents Jon Wilfrid Swanson and Alice Violet Le Masurier, Dolores and her brother Jon Swanson grew up in Montreal, Hamilton and Winnipeg. In 1953, she married Glenn Charles Booth and in their 28 years together had three children: Karen, Jon and Charlie. In 1983, Dolores and John Robert Morton (Jack) married and for 37 years until his death in 2020 enjoyed full and adventurous lives.

Dolores told us many stories of growing up in Montreal and Hamilton and of her independent and fearless exploits as a child. That determination, creativity and sense of joy inspired her life. In her teens she was a successful competitive figure skater and a member of the Ice Club of Greater Winnipeg. As a young adult, she trained as an x-ray technician, working in the Winnipeg Clinic. A member of the Winnipeg Arts Club, Dolores was an accomplished artist. In 1964, she and partner Doris Hamill founded Fleet Galleries, and over a span of almost 20 years it was one of the most respected art galleries in Canada. A member of the Professional Art Dealers Association of Canada, Dolores was influential in the incorporation of the association to stimulate Canada’s art market and encourage awareness of the visual arts. She was a pioneer in the recognition and support of Inuit art, and one of very few women who were members of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.

A curious, intelligent, and fun loving woman who enjoyed a good laugh, Dolores travelled extensively with her second husband, Jack, and entertained family and friends with tales of their journeys around the world and life at the cottage. Dolores was creative, thoughtful, and caring, with an unerring sense of how to make everyday events special. She cherished and enjoyed her lifelong friendships. Much loved, she will be with us always. Dolores’s daughter Karen (Dale) and her sons, Jon (predeceased 2019) and Charlie (Corinne), and grandchildren, Meghan (Travis) and Emily (Tyler) are stronger for her love and influence. Dolores will be missed by her brother Jon Swanson (Céline), nieces, Kristin (Dan) and Julie (Ron), and nephew Carl (Ciane).

Very special thanks to Ava, Mary, Sherryl and Rowena for their exemplary and loving care and attention to Dolores in her later years.

A private celebration of Dolores’s life will be held on April 20, 2024.
