Peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Misericordia Health Centre our mother and grandmother passed away at the age of 91.
Mom was born in Starbuck, Manitoba on August 1, 1932, daughter of Bernice and Joseph Todd.
She was predeceased by her husband Esmail Bavasah in 2010 and her daughter-in-law Jackie Robinson in 2021.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Jody Reaburn (Steve) and son Jeff Woods; grandchildren, Jennifer, David (Aleeya) and Kevin Reaburn, Daryl and Darcy Robinson and Lisa Groen. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister Valerie Metz and niece and nephews, Jacqui (Mohamed), David and Greg Metz.
Mom grew up on a farm near Starbuck and then enrolled in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. In the following years, she married and had her children. During her career as a Home Economics teacher with the Winnipeg School Division, she achieved recognition for outstanding contributions to extra-curricular activities at St. John’s High School; acted as President of the Home Economics Teachers Association; received an Honorary life membership in Manitoba Home Economics Association for education work in the field of Home Economics through her involvement in curriculum revision; workshops on teaching boys in clothing and textiles and developing a curriculum to teach boys in senior High School Home Economics.
Mom took an interest in her community and was an active member of the NDP for many years canvassing and engaging in committee work.
Following retirement Mom married Esmail Bavasah and they spent their retirement travelling the world, spending many a winter in Esmail’s hometown, Cape Town, South Africa.
Most important to Mom was her family. Watching her children grow and witnessing their accomplishments and then that of her grandchildren. Family gatherings gave her great enjoyment and satisfaction.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will held on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.
Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made in her name to a charity of your choice.

As a former student of Mrs. Woods-Bavasah, I was very saddened to hear of her passing. I wish I had paid more close attention to what she taught me in sewing class now but luckily the hemming lessons stuck. She was always kind, fair and ready to laugh at the many silly things I did that resulted in using a seam ripper multiple times, (I couldn't sew a straight seam for the life of me - still can't). My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Janice Forbister (Former student) on: Feb 24, 2024

I am sad to learn of Lorraine's passing and ask all her family to accept my best wishes and condolences. We attended that small prairie school built by the community, where the trustees were family or neighbours and sometime the teacher was also. I followed her example in education and never regretted any thing. We both married men who "came from away" and enjoyed rich and varied experiences in our lives. Rest in peace, Lorraine. You have left us a proud and lasting legacy. - Posted by: LynnWalker (Cousin) on: Jan 28, 2024

How sad to have another beautiful colleague from St. John’s in the same obituary list - Holly Korba. We too shared many group lunches together and social events. She was my go to for sewing project help. Esmail was also a staff friend. Together they made a beautiful couple. RIP Lorraine. You and Jean can be together again talking over old times in the Home Ec Dept at St. John’s. Sincere condolences to all families. - Posted by: Cheryl Willis (Staff members together at St. John’s High School) on: Jan 27, 2024
