It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Stanley. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and a close friend to many.
Stan was predeceased by his mother Stella, father Mike, sister Jennie, brothers, Adolf and Walter. He is lovingly missed by his wife Irene, children, Aleks, Peter, Michael and Stella (Ryan), sister-in-law Karen, brother-in-law Makungo, and nephew David. He will also be missed by his extended family and the many close friends he made throughout his life.
Stan was born on a farm north of Rossburn, Manitoba. At the age of three his parents and sister moved to Russell, MB. Stan taught himself how to downhill ski along the Manitoba Escarpment. He was also keen on finding interesting ways to demonstrate his handstand abilities, whether it was on top of the local water tower or with a pair of ice skates on his hands.
In the 11th grade, Stan set out to try long distance running. After graduating from high school Stan competed in the Canadian Junior Championships in Saskatoon, where he placed fifth in the one mile race and fourth in the two mile race. Stan's best race in Manitoba was winning the 12 mile race sponsored by the Winnipeg Tribune paper in 1956.
Stan obtained a full track scholarship to McNeese College in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His best race during college was a 5.2 mile run in New Orleans (1958) where he placed second among 200 other competitors from colleges and high schools in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Every summer during his four year college period Stan would hitchhike 2,800 km back to his hometown of Russell before returning to campus in the fall.
Stan graduated from McNeese College in 1960, obtaining a B.Sc. in Geology and was accepted into a graduate program at the University of Houston in September of the same year. During his three years there, Stan was an assistant in the geology department and obtained a M.Sc. in Geology.
Stan was hired by Anglo American, a multinational mining company, and was employed by the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines in Kitwe, Zambia. Stan relished his position as a mineralogist from 1965 to 1993. It was his life’s greatest work.
Stan and his first wife Suzanne welcomed their first son, Aleks. Several years later, Stan would welcome his second son, Peter, with his partner Pat. Stan would go on to meet Irene in 1987, who also worked at the Z.C.C.M. They welcomed their two children, Michael and Stella. Stan and Irene married in Zambia, honeymooning in Mauritius and remained together for 37 years.
Stan had a beautiful career in Zambia. He made numerous friends and always found an opportunity to help the local Zambian people. He loved the rain and thunderstorms of Africa. Stan was an avid traveller, visiting over 37 countries. He went on many African safaris, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and travelled extensively throughout South America. Stan never forgot his roots, returning back to Canada every two years for holidays.
Stan adored cats, enjoyed playing tennis and was well-read. He often wrote editorial letters and faithfully corresponded with friends and family. He amassed a vast mineral collection and a sizable stamp collection which he was proud of. Stan was also an amateur astronomer spending many nights observing the night sky of the southern hemisphere.
After Z.C.C.M. was nationalized Stan came back to Canada with his wife and two children, where he settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Stan worked an additional 23 years for a private auto auction before finally retiring in 2019 at the age of 83.
Even in later life Stan remained physically active. He enjoyed tending to his small vegetable garden and he continued his passion for swimming well into his early 80s. Stanley was always on the go. He lived a long and beautiful life full of adventures. He will be greatly missed by all but never forgotten.

It was a pleasure getting to know Stan over the last few years and hearing his tales and stories of his life in Geology. He even earned the name Stan The Malachite Man which always made him chuckle and smile when we referred to him as that. Eventually when he would call me, that’s how he introduced himself at the other end of the phone! My condolences to his family, I know we will all miss him at The Preferred Perch where he became a bit of a legend among all the staff. Rest in paradise Stan The Malachite Man :) - Posted by: Sherrie Versluis (Business) on: Feb 03, 2024
